Class 100 (2) An address-printing machine comprises a body 11 having a guide 14 for slidably receiving a removable and exchangeable printing plate and locating it in position, a printing pad 20 normally spaced from the position occupied by the printing plate but movable towards it to effect printing, stops 25 normally preventing movement of the pad 20 to the position in which it effects printing, levers 22 operated by the presence of a printing plate at the printing position for withdrawing the stop 25. The printing plate (Fig. 4 not shown) is provided with flanges for engaging in the guide 14 and a plurality of " pips " or depressions for engaging the levers 22. The plate is positioned over a block 15 and under an inked ribbon which may be automatically fed. The levers 22 are mounted for pivotal movement about an axis 23, their ends remote from the printing position engaging rocking levers 24 carrying the stop 25. The stop 25 normally engages with a plate 28 on the arm 19 carrying the pad 20, but on rocking of the levers 24 by operation of the levers 22 the stops 25 are moved to the inoperative position, shown in broken lines, in slots in a plate 29. Further levers 22 and rocking levers 24 may be provided without stops 25 and which are always prevented from moving by the action of the plate 29. The machine is thus prevented from operating with plates having additional pips or depressions in the wrong position as well as depressions in the correct positions and with plates not having depressions in the correct positions. Up to six depressions may be provided on plates for use with the machine shown. in a simpler form of machine the pipoperated stops 25 and other associated parts are replaced by a single stop member in the form of a stud projecting upwardly from the body and mounted on a bar which is slidably supported on the body. When a plate is inserted the rear edge of the plate engages the sliding bar and moves it back to bring the upstanding stud beneath a recess formed in the underside of the arm 19. The forward edge of the block 15 is formed with recesses only at positions corresponding to the pips actually provided on the plates intended for use with the machine.
