Class 100(4) An accounting machine has a holder for supporting a cheque and a counterfoil in front of a platen over which is a record sheet so that as the record sheet moves with the carriage column to column for the recording of data the holder is releasably held from lateral movement and is moved vertically one line space. When the data has been recorded on the counterfoil the cheque moves with the carriage while it is typed. The accounting machine has two sets of amount keys 14, 16, Fig. 1, controlling type bars 22, 23 and has date type bars 25 and a normal carriage 11 with platen roller 26, paper feed rolls 29 and carbon roll holders 30, 31. The record sheets are fed over the platen 26 and a cheque and counterfoil 85 is supported and fed in front by a holder of a bail which can be swung relative to the platen by a handle 40. The bail comprises end plates 32, 33, Fig. 3, pivoted on studs 34 in the carriage side plates 35, 36 connected by a transparent paper table 37. Plate 32 being connected to a lever 43 which by connections to a cam 50 which acts on a roller 52 partially opens the bail on the carriage return. A bar 70, mounting a cam 71 which engages a fixed roller 73, connects levers 68 pivoted at 49, 44 and through links 67 and bell cranks 62 raises the bail by rollers 65 engaging the rearward leg 58 of plates 56 vertically slidable on studs 55. Supported between the plates 56 is a shaft 74 on which the cheque holder 76, Fig. 7, slides. A bar 79 engages a magnet 77 to hold the holder 76 stationary lengthwise as the carriage moves from column to column until a bracket 131 on the shaft 74 engages a magnet 133. In use items are first typed on the amount keys 14 the cam 71 raising the holder 76 line by line to type the right hand set of data on the counterfoil as the carriage moves from column to column The cam 71 then lowers the holder before the amount keys 16 are used for the left hand set of data on the counterfoil after which the bracket 131 engages the magnet 133 and the holder moves with the carriage as the cheque is typed. The holder and shaft are detachable from the plate 56 and the roller 73 can be swumg out of contact with the cam 71 so that the bail is not raised.
