feeding, guiding and controlling mechanism for typewriting machines and its general object is to provide improved mechanism of the character specified.
-More specifically stated the object of the invention is to provide an i proved mechanism which is especially adapted for use in writing tax bills and records of the sort that are employed in municipal accounting.
In carrying out the inventionin the present instance, one of the special objects of the invention has been to provide novel means for releasing the main or intermediate feed or pressure rollerwhich controls the bill sheet or narrow work sheet, said novel means in the present instance being automatically operated during the traveling movements of the platen and at a predetermined point in j the travel.
Another object is to provide an improved deflector mounted independently of the paper table and releasable with said intermediate or main feed roller.. v
Another object is to provide improved adjustable end gages cooperative with the narrow sheet or tax bill when introduced at the front of the machine, said gages being adjustably 1r ounted in guide Ways on the paper table at the rear of the machine.
Another'objectis to provide an improved construction and mounting for the main feed roller.
Another object is to provide improved means for simultaneously releasing the main feed roller and the terminal or marginal feed and pressure rollers, the last named improved means being in the present instance hand controlled and operative at will and comprising an eccentric device, the construction being such that the main and terminal rollers are locked off in released position.-
Another object is to provide an improved construct-ion of the platen frame or carrier, the sa e resulting in an increased rigidity of said frame, the improved frame comprising'a connecting part or bridge piece which strengthens the frame and further provides i a housing for the feed and pressure rollers and for the restoring springs therefor.
Other objects will hereinafter appear.
To the above and other ends my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. I
In -the accompanying drawings, my invention is shown as adapted to a No. 11 Remington front-strike typewriting machine but it is to be understood that the nature of the said invention is such that it may readily be applied in whole or in part to other styles of writing machines.

Figs. a and 5 are operating views corresponding to Fig. 2 but omitting some of the parts shown in said Fig. 2 and showing other parts in difierent relationships. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a detail of the feed roller mounting. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the dotted line 'y in Fig. 6.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the main frame of the machine comprises posts 1 supporting a top plate 2 provided with a trough or depression 3. Grooved guide-Ways 4 and 5 rigidly secured above the top plate cooperate through anti friction rollers 6 with the grooved front and rear bars 7 and 8 of a rectangular carriage truck which further includes end bars 9. The truck supports a platen frame or carrier comprising end bars or plates 10 and 11 which are provided with hub portions 12 and 13, said hub portions extending laterally outward through openings 14 in the bars 9 and being engaged by screws 15 which in the present instance secure the carriage frame in rigid relationship with the carriage truck. The carriage truck and frame as thus far described are of ordinary construction except that the screws 15 are usually adjusted to allow shifting movements of the platen frame on the truck. The

carriage frame however is of an improved design comprising a connecting cross bar or bridge piece which, asclearly appears from Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5, is angular in cross section comprising a vertically disposed portion 16 and a horizontally disposed portion 17. Screws 18 rigidly secure the bridge piece and the end bars 10 and 11 in rigid relationship. The bridge piece greatly strengthens the platen frame and increases its rigidity. Further it provides a housing or protecting cover for the feed or pressure rollers and their restoring springs as hereinafter described as well as providing a mounting on which said rollers and springs are supported, said mounting comprising lugs or up rights 19 integral swith and projecting upward from the rear end of the horizontal portion 17. There are three of these uprights shown, one in the middle of the bridge piece and the other two near the ends. thereof. A rotary platen 20 with the front face whereof the types (not shown) are adapted to cooperate has an axle 21 which bears in the hub portions 12. The platen is connected with a line spacing ratchet wheel 22 which.
is cooperative with the usual line spacing devices (not shown).
The paper feeding, controlling and guiding devices comprise a paper table 23 arranged behind the platen and inclining upward and'rearward. Said paper table is provided with ears 24 which bear on a rod 25 secured to and integral with extensions 10 and 11 on the end plates 10 and 11. Suitably secured to the under side of the paper table 23 are arms or braces 26 which incline downward and outward, terminating in horizontally disposed ears 26 which receive screws 27, the screws engaging tapped openings in the usual arms 28 which project rearward from the rear bar 8 of the platen carrier and support the column stop bar 29. Arranged between the ears 26 and the arms 28 are washers or collars 30 which are clamped in place bv the'screws 27. The construction is such that the paper table is detachably secured in rigid relationship with the platen frame or carrier. The column stop bar 29 is adapted to receive, column stops 31 of the usual construction with which cooperate key controlling denominational stops 32 (Fig. 2). Secured at their upper ends as by screws 33 to the forward face of the paper table 23 are apair of vertically disposed track or guide-ways 34, said trackways being preferably made of sheet metal and conforming to the surface of the paper table, curving downward over the same and the lower end portions-o said ways extending through and being controlled by slots in the paper table. The ways 34 are provided with oppositely disposed and inwardly projecting lips or flaps 35 providing grooves which receive and support end stop or gage devices 36. As shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines the engaging portion 36 of each device 36 is wider than the distance between the inner edges of the flaps 35 so that the sides of the part 36 are frictionally engaged and controlled by the grooved portions of the associate guide 34. The device 36 is slid into the guide-way and will be frictionally held at any point along the guide-way to which it may be adjusted. The rounded upper eno 36 of. each device 36 serves as a finger piece which enables the device as a whole to be adjusted up and down in the guide way toward and from the platen. The lower end 36 of the free end portion of the device is bent rearward at right angles to rovide an abutment, gage or stop proper. lhe paper table is also provided at its left-hand portion in a. horizontally disposed guide or track-way 37 similar in construction to the track-ways 34, said track-way 37' accommodating the plate-like portion 38 of a side gage or guide which further includes an upright guide portion or gage proper 39 integral with the plate 38. The plate 38 is frictionally controlled by the guide-way 37 and enables the gage 39 to be adjusted lengthwise of the platen to an desired position. The side gage 39 is a apted as will hereinafter be explained to cooperate with the left edge of a comparatively wide record sheet which is inserted from 'the rear behind the platen; while the end gages 36 are adapted for cooperation with the bottom edge of .a narrow sheet or tax bill inserted from the front of the machine.
Separate from and movable independently of the paper table 23 is a paper apron or deflector 40, the same beginnin at the rear of the platen near the lower en of the table 23 and curving downward and forward around.the platen, terminatin below the printing line on the front face t ereof. The deflector 40 is secured by screws/i1 to a pair of blocks or ears 42 which are spaced apart by the deflector and bear loosely on a sleeve, tube or hollow shaft 43. said tube extending lengthwise of the platen behind the same and bearing loosely in upri hts 19 (see especially Figs. 3 and 6). he ends of the sleeve 43 terminate just outside the end up-* rights or standards 19 and are cut away as indicated to provide steps or engaging devices 44 which are adapted to cooperate with rollers. The machine illustrated is of the wideor long carriage type and accordingly I prefer -to provide a main feed roller mechanism which comprises .two main parts or sections each of which is mounted on a pair of angular arms orcarriers 49 provided with collar portions 50 which bear loosely on the sleeve or shaft 43. Each principal part of the main feed roller comprises a shaft or rod 51 which bears at its endin one of the pairs of arms 49 and supports the sections 52 comprising the feed roller .part, there being three sections or divisions in each oftsaid principal feed roller parts or elements as will be clearly seen from reference to Fig. 3. The outer collar portions 50 cooperate with the adjacent uprights 19 to prevent longitudinal movement of the, feed roller parts without interfering. with their swinging or releasing movements. It will be understood that not only are the two principal parts or halves of the main feed roller separatel and independently supported but the end 0 each shaft is supported by a carrier 49 which is independent of any other carrier. At the inner ends the two principal parts comprisin the main feed roller are separated by the middleupright 19. The collar portions 50 of the adjacent hanger arms 49 abut this middle or intermediate upright 19 at its opposite faces. Each hanger arm is provided at its lower edge with a notched lug 49 over which is hooked the rear end of a restoring or draw spring 53, the draw springs extending forward transversely of and above the horizontal part 17 of the bridgepiece, being anchored at their forward ends to screws or adjustable anchor devices 54 which are secured in the upright portion 16 of said bridge piece. These springs operating through the arms or carriers 49 maintain the sections of the main feed roller in cotiperative engagement with the lower rear face of the platen 20, said sections protruding through openings 55 in the deflector 40. The construction is such that either end of one of the shafts 51 may yield independently of the opposite end thereof and of course such yield in one shaft will not aifect the other shaft 'orthe feed rollersections thereon, the consequence being that inequalities of the paper orother unevenness at one point may be compensated for without disturbance of the feed roller sections at an other point along the platen. 7
Outside each of the end uprights 19 is arranged a U-shaped carrier comprising a pair of angular arms 56 and a connecting cross I so bar 57 which provide a bearing for'the rod or shaft 57 a of a marginal or terminal feed or pressure roller 58. The inner arm 56 of each carrier bears on the outer end portion of the sleeve 43 while the outer arm 56 bears on the rod 48. Each outer arm 56 has a notched lug 56 over which is hooked the rear end of a coiled draw spring 59, said draw spring extending forward over and transversely of the part 17 and being an: chored to an adjustable screw 60 secured to the upright portion 16 of the bridge piece. It will be seen that the terminal pressure rOllS are spring-pressed toward the laten by their springs 59 independently of t e intermediate or main feed roller. The terminal rollers 58 protrude through openings in the deflector 40 corresponding with the openings 55 but somewhat wider than said openings so that neither the rollers 58 nor their arms 56 engage with the deflector 40 to support or control the same.
. The sleeve or hollow shaft 43 is provided with releasing devices for releasing the main feed roller when the shaft is turned or rocked,vwl1ile the shaft 48 is provided with similar devices enabling it when rocked to release the marginal feed rollers. The releasing devices for the main feed roller comprise crank arms 61 which are secured b shouldered screws 62 to the sleeve'or sha t 43, it being understood that said screws do not penetrate into the shaft 48, (see Fig. The reduced ends of the screws 62 engage holes in the tube 43 but do not contact with shaft 48. There is a crank arm 61 associated with each of the arms or carriers 49, each crank arm being provided with a stud 63 which extends outward laterally and overlies the associate arm 49. Preferably the studs 63 are eccentrical'ly mounted so that they may be turned or adjusted to provide more or less lost motion beforethey cooperatively engage with the arms '49. Nuts 64 cotiperate with the studs 63 to lock them in adjusted positions on the crank arms 61'. The construction provides for properly timing the releasing movement of'all of the carriers 49. It will be understood that when the shaft or sleeve 43 is rocked it will operate through the crank arms 61 and studs 63 to swing loosely mounted arms 49'downward and overcome the springs 53 releasing the main feed roller throughout its length, and that this movement may be distinct from any movement of the terminal rollers 58. In the present instance this rotary movement or rocking of the sleeve 43 is ,preferably accomplished automatically by devices comprising a plate-like device or arm 65 which, as illustrated in Fig. 3, is provided with ears 66 which fit over the sleeve 43. Integral with one of the ears 66 is a hub 67 which receives a set screw 68 by which the arm or releasing device 65 is secured in fixed relationship with the sleeve 43. The arm 65 extends downward and is adapted to co-act at intervals of five letter space units apart in a rod or bar 72 which is seated in the bottomof the trough 3, said rod being adjustably secured near its ends by screws 73 which pass through longitudinal slots 7 k in the bar 72 (Fig; l) and engage in tapped holes in the top plate. The holes may be, for convenience, numbered to correspond with the front carriage scale 75 but in the Inverse order. The pin and slot adjustment 73, 74: permits of any adjustment of the rotary cam 69 intermediate the adjustment provided for by the spaced holes 71. A scale may be provided near the left end of the bar and a cooperating indicator on the trough 3 to facilitate this intermediate adjustment. Also the screws 73 may be removed, permitting the removal of the bar 72 and the adjustment of the cam 69 while the bar is detached, although it will be understood that for any adjustment of the cam in the holes 71 near the ends of the bar, said bar need not be detached for adjusting purposes. The construction provides for automatically releasing the main feed rollers, this being accomplished by the engagement of the arm 65 with the cam 69 during traveling movements of the carriage and platen, the cam operating to force the arm 65 rearward, rocking the sleeve 43 and releasingthe main feed roller as shown in Fig. 4. It will be observed that the automatic-releasing means comprises two elements, one the arm 65 traveling with the platen and the other the cam 69, the latter being relatively stationary and normally in the path of the element or arm 65. The horizontal portion 17 of the bridge piece is provided with out-outs or depressions 17 to accommodate sections of the main feed roller when in released position (Fig. 5) from'which figure it will be noted that the angular bridge piece 16, 17 provides a housing or projection for the feed rollers and for the feed roller restoring springs. The deflector 40 is normally maintained in spring-pressed engagement with the platen by adjustable set screws or devices 61 carried by the two outer arms 61, which devices contact with the under side of said deflector, the construction being such that when the main feed roller is released the loosely mounted deflector 40 is free to drop down at its forward portion away from the platen, providing an'opening or passage-way for the paper introduced at the front. It will also be understood that this automatic releaseof the main feed roller effects the release or separation ofthe paper deflector from the platen and further that this release and separation occurs at a predetermined point in the travel of the platen, which point may be varied at will by varying the location of the rotary cam 69 on the bar 72 as well asby varying the position of thebar and cam together by "loosening the screw 73 and resetting the bar 72. The automatic release of the main feed roller as stated does not affect the terminal rollers 58.
The terminal rollers 58 are preferably releasable at will by hand controlled devices comprising for each carrier 56, 57 a crank arm 7 6- ecured by a set screw 7 7 to the haft 48 and provided with an .adjustable stud 78 which overlies the outer arm. 56 of the carrier and is adapted to swing said arm-on the shaft 48, overcoming the associate spring 59 and releasing the terminal or marginal roller 58. Endwise movement of each terminal roller is prevented by the cotiperation of the carrier arms 56 with the associate upright 19 and the associate crank arm 76 which, however, afford sufiicient freedom to permit unobstructed swinging or releasing movements of the carrier and roller 58. To rock the shaft 48 in the manner described devices are provided comprising a crank arm 79 having a collar80 secured to the lefthand end portion of said shaft outside the end 'plate 10. The crank arm is connected at its free end to an upright link or strap 81 enlarged at its upper end and receiving an eccentric boss82 integral with an arm 83 pivoted eccentrically of the boss 82 at 84 on the end plate 10, said crank arm terminatingin a finger piece or key 85. The parts just described are normally arranged as in Fig. 2 but by pushing the release key 85 rearward to the Fig. 5 position, the strap 81 is forced downward, depressing the crank arm 79 and rocking the shaft 48, releasing the terminal rollers 58. This rocking of the shaft 48 operates in the present instance through the shouldered collar 46 to rock the shaft or sleeve 43 and also to effect the release of the main feed roller simultaneously with the marginal rollers. This simultaneous operation will be understood from a consideration of Figs. 3, 6 and 7. The shaft 48- as it turns forward brings the shoulder 45 at the forward side of the collar 46 into engagement with the corresponding shoulder or off-set 44 on the sleeve 43, thus forcing the sleeve to turn with the shaft and effecting the release of the main feed rollers as described in connection with the automatic releasing thereof.
It will thus be seen that by my present construction I provide for releasing the main or intermediate roller or rollers either automatically or by hand and that while .the automatic release thereof occurs independently of the terminal rollers, the manual release of said main roller 0n the other hand is effected simultaneously with that of the terminal rollers and is brought about through the releasing devices for the terminal rollers. The manual or hand con trolled releasing devices comprising the train beginning with the key 85 and including the eccentric device 82, the stra 81 and the crank arm 79 have not been particularly described as they are per 86 the invention of Alfred D. Maury and are disclosed in his application, Sr. No. 655,669 filed October 20, 1911. Preferably also I employ a springbail or pressure device to cooperate with the front upper side of the platen, said device comprising side arms 86 and a connecting cross rod '87 provided with pressure roll 88 (Fig. 1). The arms 86 are secured to a rock shaft 89 which bears in brackets 90 secured to the front bar 7 of the carriage truck. Draw springs 91 are connected to the brackets 90 and to the arms 86 and exert pressure on the bail to maintain the rolls 88 in operative engagementwith the front side of the platen above the printing line. Preferably also a side guide or gage 92 is adjustably supported on thecross rod 87 near the left hand end thereof, a thumb nut 93 on the gage cooperating with the rod 87 to maintain it engaged in adjusted position. The gage cooperates with the left-hand edge of a relatively narrow sheet or tax bill 94, said tax bill ,in the present instance being about 11 inches wide, which is introduced from the front and-which is of less width than the distance between the terminal rollers 58 so that the gage is adjusted somewhat to the right of the vertical plane of the left-hand roller 58. The rollers 58' cooperate with the side margins of a Wide record sheet ,95 which is introduced into the machine from the rear in the usual way, the side gage 39 cooperating with the lefthand edge of said record sheet to position it properly lengthwise of the platen. In
the present instance the record sheet is some sixteen inches in width so that the margins exposed outside the eleven'inch tax bill are each about two and one-halfinches in width. The record sheet passes up at the front side of th platen together with a transfer or carbon sheet 96 and is controlled by the bail rolls 88 as shown in Fig. 4. In order further to guide the narrow sheet 94 when it i introduced into the machine from the front, -I provide a guide rod or shaft 97 which bears rotatably at its ends in theside arms 86 and" is arranged a short distance forward of the cross rod 87 providing a space or slot-way between the two. sheet 95 and the carbon sheet 96 are then introduced together at the rear of the machine over thepaper table 23 with their left edges against the side guide 39 and passed downward around and beneath the platen and between it and the deflector 40.
The two sheets 95 and 96 are'advanc'ed above the printing line and their forward end portions are introduced under the pressurerolls 88, passing between the same and the platen as shown in Fig. 4. VVhen the sheets 95- and 96 have been properly ad. justed the key 85 will be retracted to the Fig. 4 position, thus restoring all of the pressure rolls into cooperative engagement with the platen and restoring also the deflector 40 into spring-pressed engagement with the platen, said deflector when the release of the paper rollers is effected, having dropped down onto. the top of the bridge portion 16 as shown in Fig. 5. The operator next releases the carriage by manipulating one'of the regular release keys or by a tabulating operation, causing the carriage to move leftward and bringing the arm into coiiperation with the cam 69, releasing the main feed roller and the deflector 40 but without afi'ecting the terminal rollers 58 which maintain the record sheet in adjusted position. The position of the parts at this time is illustrated in Fig, 4. It should be understood that the automatic releasing devices 65 and 69 are preferably adjusted to effect the release of the carriage subsequent to the point at which the last printing on the bill sheets is to be done. With the main feed roller and the defiectorreleased as in Fig. 4, the operator inserts the tax .bill94 from the front of the machine with its left edge against the gage 92. passing said sheet over the guide rod 97 and between the guide rod and the rollers 88, the guide rod assist ing to .prevent and smooth out creases in the sheet 94. From the guide rod 97 the sheet 94 passes downward between the platen and the deflector 40, being slid rearward over the main feed roller and between the marginal feed rollers. The bottom end of said sheet is brought into coeperation with the end sto s 36 as illustrated in 'Fig. 4 and is there y properly gaged. The result is that if now the-operator restores the carriage from left to right the mainfeed roller and the deflector will engage with the bill sheet 94 and said sheet .will be superposed over the record sheet 95 and in position to receive the line of writing. Preferably in tax billing work each tax bill receives but a single line of writing. 'Consequently when the line of writing on the first bill as been finished, the carriage is released, causing the arm 65 to cooperate with the cam 69 to automatically release the written tax bill, which may then be removed and a new tax bill adjusted into place as has en described. The carriage is then restored from i left to right as before, the restoring opera tion being effected by the usual line space handle which operates first to space the record sheet prior tothe restoring of the main feed roller into engagement with the platen. Consequently the line spacing operationdoes not affect the newly adjusted tax bill, but only the record sheet. It will be understood that the record sheet receives the type impressions through the carbon paper '96 simultaneously with the writing of the bill sheet and that each record sheet will contain in duplicate the entries on a series of bill sheets while the side margins of the record sheet outside of the bill sheet may receive entries not intended for the tax bill itself; also it will be understood that when a record sheet has been completely filled out it is removed from the machine and a new record sheet introduced as has been described.
My. present invention provides a construction which is especially adapted for use in tax billing work for the reason that .tax bills usually comprise a plurality .of
folds with, interleaved carbon sheets, thus making a comparatively thick packet, although for convenience of illustration a sinle thickness only is shown in the drawlugs; and it may further be observed that it has not been thought necessary to illustrate in detail the printed blanks, although of course the tax bill and record sheet have special forms of columnar arrangement. This thick packet is difiicult to handle properly in the usual way and hence theadjustment of it to receive writing is greatly facilitated by providing for an automatic control of the paper feeding and regulating devices so as to facilitate the introduction of the packet or work element at the front of the machine, or for front feeding the same, as it is usually termed, and by handling the work element in the described manner. It will, however, be understood that the mechanism need not be employed in the described way but that it may be used with it in other connections; and also that various constructional changes may be made without departing from my invention and that parts of the invention may be used without other parts.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a plurality of releasable paper controlling devices, and means the operation whereof is due solely totraveling. movements of the platen for automatically releasingv certain of said paper controlling devices while certain other of said devices, between which the released devices are located, remain in cotiperation with the platen, said automatic means comprising two coacting elements, one traveling with the platen and the other relatively stationary and normallyin the path of said traveling element.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a plurality of releasable paper controlling devices arranged substantially in line with each other, and means the operation whereof is due solely to traveling movements of the platen for automatically releasing certain only of said paper controlling devices independently of the controlling devices at the extreme ends, said automatic means comprising two co-acting elements,one traveling with the platen and the other relatively stationary and normally in the path of said traveling element.
3. In a typewritingmachine, the combination of a platen, a plurality of feed roller devices including marginal feed rollers, and means operating solely through traveling movements of the platen and independently ofsaid marginal feed rollers for automatically moving certain other of said feed roller devices away from and toward the platen, said automatic means comprising two coacting elements, one traveling with the platen and the other relatively stationary and normally in the path of said traveling element.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a set of feed roller devices arranged substantially in line with each other, springs constantly pressing said devices toward the platen, and means operating solely through traveling movements of the platen and independently of the two feed roller devices at the ends of said set for overcoming certain of said springs and moving the remaining feed roller devices away from the platen, said automatic means comprising two cQ-acting elements, one traveling with the platen and the other relatively stationary and normally in the path of said traveling element.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a rotary platen, means for turning the same to advance the paper, releasable paper controlling devices, and adjustable means for automatically releasing said devices independently of turning movements of the platen to advance the paper.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, a-releasable paper controlling device, means ,the operation whereof is due solely to traveling movements of the platen for automatically releasing said device at a predetermined point in the travel of the platen, and means for varying said predetermined point.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a travelin platen, a releasable paper controlling device, and means the operation whereof is due solely to traveling movements of the platen including a rotary cam for automatically releasing said device. 1

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a travelingplaten, a releasable paper controlling device, means including a rotary cam for automatically releasing saiddevice, and means for afi'ording anadjustment of said cam to vary the point in the .eni iwise travel of the platen at which said device is released,

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, a spring pressed paper controlling device, means operative solely through the traveling movements of the platen for automatically overcoming the spring pressure and moving said device out of coiiperative relationship with the platen, said means comprising two co-acting elements one traveling with the platen and the other relatively stationary and normally in 1 the path of the traveling element, a finger piece, and connections between said finger piece and said device for moving said device independently of traveling movements of the platen.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, a paper controlling device, means operatlve solely through traveling movements of the platen for automatically moving said device relatively to the platen at a predetermined point in the travel of the platen, and hand controlled devices for at will moving said device relatively to the platen, said automatic means comprising two co-acting elements, one traveling with theplaten and the other relatively stationary and normally in the path of said traveling element.
14;. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, a plurality of releasable paper controlling devices, means for automatically releasing certain only of said devices at a predetermined point in the j travel of the platen, and hand controlled means for at will releasing all of said devices including the devices that are also i automatically controlled.
15 In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, a releasable paper controlling device, and means including a rotary cam for automatically releasing said device at a predetermined point in the travel of the platen, and further including a device co-active with said cam, said device traveling with the platen and having normally a path which intersects said rotary cam.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, a releasable paper controlling device, and adjustable means for automatically releasing said device, said means including a rotary cam and a support for said cam adjustably mounted -on the frame of the machine.

an arm on said sleeve, means for automatically actuating said arm during the travel of the platen, hand controlled means for actuating said shaft to release said second feed roller, and connections between said shaft and said sleeve, said connections be ing operative by said hand controlled means to transmit motion from said shaft to said sleeve and inoperative by said cam.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, two papervfeed rollers arranged side by side, supporting means comprising a plurality of shafts for said paper feed rollers, a connection between said shafts, means connected to one bf said shafts and operative through said connection on the other of said shafts to release said feed rollers simultaneously, and means operative on one of said shafts for releasing one of said feed rollers independently of the other.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a shaft, a sleeve surroundingsaid shaft, a feed roller on said shaft, a second feed rolle'r on said sleeve,
means for turning said sleeve and said shaft to simultaneously release said feed rollers, and means for turning said sleeve independently of said shaft to release one only of said feed rollers.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination of aplaten, a shaft, a sleeve surrounding said shaft, a feed roller onsaid shaft, a second feed roller on said sleeve, hand operated means for turning said shaft and said sleeve to simultaneously release both said feed rollers, and automatically actuated means for turning said sleeve independently of said shaft to release one only of said feed rollers.
24. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a .platen, two paper feed rollers,
supporting means comprising a plurality of shafts for said paper feed rollers, a connection between said shafts, means connected to one of said shafts 'for actuating both shafts to releasethe feed rollers and for locking said feed rollers in released position, and means operative on one of sad shafts for releasing one of said feed rollers independently of the other.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, two paper feed rollers, sup orting means comprising a plurality of she ts for said paper feed rollers, connections enabling one of said shafts to turn the other, means connected to one of said shafts comprising a hand controlled eccentric device to release the feed rollers simultaneously and lock them in released-position, and means operative. on one of said shafts for releasing one only of said feed rollers.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combisupporting means comprising a plurality of shafts for said paper feed rollers, connections enabling one of said shafts to turn the other, means connected to one of said shafts comprising a hand controlled eccentric device to release the feed rollers simultaneously and lock them in released position, and automatic means operating during traveling movements of the platen to release one of said feed rollers independently of the other. 1 27. In a typewriting machine, the. combination of a platen, two paper feed rollers, supporting means comprising a plurality of shafts for said paper feed rollers, connections enabling one of said shafts to turn the other, means connected to one of said shaftscomprising a hand controlled'eccentric device to release the feed rollers simultaneously and lock them in released position, and means comprising an arm fixed to the other of said shafts and a cooperating cam on the frame of the machine to automatically actuate the last named shaft to release the feed roller supported thereby.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a hand controlled rock shaft, a sleeve surrounding the same, a connection enabling said rock shaft when turned to turn said sleeve, a feed roller loosely supported on said sleeve, a device secured to said sleeve to release said feed roller when the sleeve is turned, and means for turning said sleeve independently of said rock .shaft.
29. In a typewriting machine, the,combination of a hand controlled rock shaft, a sleeve surrounding the same, a connection for turning said sleeve from said rock shaft, a feed roller loosely supported on said sleeve, a device secured tosaid sleeve to release said feed roller, means for turnin said sleeve independently of said rock s aft, a feed roller loosely mounted on said rock shaft, and a device fixed to said rock shaft for releasing said feed roller.
30. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, a releasable feed roller, a releasable paper deflector, and means operative solely through traveling movementsof the platen for automatically releasing said feed roller and said deflector at a predetermined point in the travel of the platen, said automatic means comprising two co-act-ing'elements, one traveling with the platen and the other relatively stationary and normally in the path of said traveling element.
34. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen, a releasable feed roller, a releasable paper deflector, means operative solely through traveling movements of the platen for automatically releasing said feed roller and said deflector at a predetermined point in the travel of the platen, said automatic means comprising two co-acting elements, one traveling with the platen and the other relatively stationary and normally in the path of said traveling element, and means for varying said predetermined point.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, feed roller devices for a bill sheet, marginal feed 'roller devices for a record sheet, and mea-ns'operating solely through traveling movements of the platen p and independently of said marginal feed rollers for automatically releasing said bill sheet, said automatic means comprising two co 'acting elements, one travehng wit the platen and the other relatively vstationary sheet wider than the bill and normally in the path of said traveling element. 1
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, feed roller devices for a bill sheet, marginal feed roller devices for a record sheet and means operating solely through traveling movements of the platen and independently of said marginal feed rollers for automatically releasing said bill sheet during traveling movement of the platen and at a predetermined point, said automatic means comprising two co-acting elements, one traveling with the platen and the other relatively stationary and normally in the path of said traveling element.
37. In a typewriting machine, thecombination of a platen, devices cooperative therewith for controlling a bill sheet, marginal devices cooperative with theplaten for con trolling the marginal portions of a record bill sheet, said sheet and said record sheet being superposed in respect to each other,
and means operative on the bill-sheet on the bill sheet controlling devices to automat-ically release the bill sheetwhile the rec- 0rd sheet remains in control of said marginal devices and also for releasingat will said marginal devices and said bill sheet controlling devices. simultaneously.
39. In a. visible writing typewriting machine, thecombination of a platen, marginal feed rollers coiiperative with the lower side of the platen, an intermediate feed roller cooperative with the lower side of the platen,
a paper deflector extending around the under side of the platen and terminating below '5 the printing line, and means for releasing the intermediate feed roller and the deflector independently of the marginal feed rollers and for releasing simultaneously all of the feed rollers and the deflector.
40. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, marginal feed .rollers cooperative with the lower side of the platen,- an intermediate feed roller, a paer deflector curving around the platen and terminating below the printing line, and means. operating automatically solely through traveling movements of the platen and independently of the marginal feed roll ers to release the intermediate feedroller and permit said deflector to swing away from the platen, said. automatic means comprising two co-acting elements, one traveling with the platen and the other relatively stationary and normally in the path of said traveling element.
41. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, marginal feed rollers cooperative with. the lowerside of the platen, an intermediate feed roller, a paper deflector curving around the platen and terminating below the printing line, and means operating automatically to release the intermediate feed roller and permit said deflector to swing away from the platen independently of the marginal feed rollers so that narrow paper may be introduced at the front side of the platen and betweenit and said deflector and also for at will releasing simultaneously all of the feed rollers and the deflector.
. 42. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, marginal feed rollers. cooperative with the lower side of the platen, an intermediate feed roller, a paper deflector extending around the under side of the platen and terminating below the printing line, and means operating automatically to release the intermediate feed roller and permitv said deflector to swing away from the platen independently of the marginal feed rollers so that sheets narrower than the distance'between the marginal feed rollers may be introduced at the front side of the platen between the same and the paper deflector.
43. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a paper table at the rear of the platen, a separate movable paper deflector extending around the platen and terminating below the printing line at the front side thereof, a main feed roller, terminal pressure rollers, a side guide for a wide sheet when introduced at the rear of the machine, a side guide or a narrow sheet when introduced at the front of the machine means for releasing the main feed roller and permitting the deflector to drop away from the platen to afford a passage for the narrow sheet from thefront of the machine, and key controlled devices operative at will to simultaneously release the main feed roller and the terminal pressure rollers.
44. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a paper table at the rear of the platen, a separate movable paper deflector extending around the platen and terminating below thep rinting line at the front side thereof, a main feed roller, terminal pressure rollers, a side guide for a wide sheet when introduced at the rear of the machine, a side guide for a narrow sheet when introduced at the front of the machine, an end gage for the narrow sheet, means for releasing the main feed roller and permitting the deflector to drop away from the platen to afford a passage for the narrow sheet from the front of the machine, the narrow sheet being passed rearward until its lower edge cotiperates with said gage, and a key controlled devices operative at will to simultaneously release the main feed roller and the terminal pressure rollers.
45. In .a visible writin typewriting machine, the combination 0 a platen, a main feed roller, marginal feed rollers, an end stop or gage at the rear of the platen, a paper deflector extending around the under side of the platen and terminating below the printing line, means for releasing the main feed roller and the deflector independently of the marginal feed rollers so that a narrow sheet may be introduced at the front of the machine and caused to cooperate with said end gage, and key controlled devices for releasing simultaneously both the main and marginal rollers and the deflector.
46. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a main feed roller, marginal feed rollers, a paper table at the rear of the platen, a paper deflector movable independently of said paper table, said deflector extending around the platen and terminating below the printing line at the front side thereof, an end gage on said paper table, means operating automatically to release the main feed rollers and -permit said deflector to swing away from the platen so that a narrow sheet may be introduced at the front of the machine and brought into cooperation with said end gage, and devices for at will releasing simultaneously the main and marginal feed rollers and permitting the paper deflector to swing away from the platen.
47. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carrier, a platen thereon, releasable feed rollers, a paper table at the rear sideof said platen over which paper may be introduced into the machine,
and an end gage mounted on'said table and the rear, the sheet introduced at the rear passing freely over said end gage, which is provided with a portion that prevents the engagement with said abutment of the sheet introduced at the rear.
48. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carrier, a platen thereon, releasable feed rollers, a paper table at the rear side of said platen over which paper may be introduced from the rear into the machine, a grooved guide way on said paper table, and an end gage slidably mounted on said grooved guide way, sald end gage cooperating with the bottom I edge of a sheet introduced from the front of p the machine, the last named sheet being in dependent of the sheet introduced at the rear, the sheet introduced at the rear passing freely over said end gage.
49. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carrier, a platen thereon, releasable feed rollers, a paper table being independent of the sheet introduced at the rear, the sheet introduced at the rear, passingfreely over said end stops.
50. In a front-strike typewriting machine,
the combination'of a platen carrier, a platen thereon, releasable feed rollers, a paper table at the rear sideof said platen over which paper may be introduced into the machine, vertically disposed parallel guide ways on said paper table, sheet metal end gages slid ably adjustable on said guide ways for cooperation with the bottom edge of a sheet introduced from the front of the machine, the last named sheet being independent of the sheet introduced at the rear, the sheet introduced at the rear passing freely over said end gages, a horizontal guide way on said paper table, and a side gage .frictionally mounted on said horizontal guide way, said side gage cooperating with the sheetintroduced at the rear. 51. In a typewriting machine, the combnation of a platen, a platencarriage, paper guiding devices cooperative with the platen below the printing line, a spring mounted pressure bail pivoted on said carriage'and provided with rollers cooperative with said platen above the printing line to control a record-sheet, a paper guide rod on said pressure bail forward of said pressure rollers, and means for automatically releasing said paper guiding devices so that paper ma be introduced from the front of the mac in'e over said guide rod and between said paper guiding devicesand said platen.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, paper guiding devices cooperative with the platen below the printing line, a spring mounted pressure bail pivoted on said carriage and provided with rollers cooperative with said platen abovethe printing line to control a record sheet, a paper guide rod on said pressure bail forward of said pressure rollers,
means for automatically releasing said paper guldmg devices so that paper may be introduced from the front of the machine over,
said guide rod and between said paper guiding devices and said platen, a side gage on said pressure bail, and means for afi'ording adjustment of said side gage, said side gage being perforated for the passage of said guide rod.
53. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; feed rollers cooperative with the under side thereof; means forreleasing the feed rollers; a plurality of feed roller restoring springs; and a platen carrieron which the platen and feed rollers are supported, said platen carrier comprising vertically disposed end plates at the ends of the platen and a bridge piece connecting said end plates and extending lengthwise of'the' platen below the same, said bridge piece being angular in cross section comprising an upright portion and a horizontally disposed portion and providing a housing for the "feed rollers, the' horizontally disposed portion of the bridge piece being formed with depressions to receive the feed rollers when they are released, said restoring springs being each connected at one end with the upright portion of said bridge piece and extending transversely of the horizontal portion thereof and above the same.
54. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, releasable feed rollers cooperative with the under side thereof, a plurality of feed roller restoring sprin s, and a platen carrier comprising verticafiy disposed end plates and a connecting bridge piece extending lengthwise of the platen be-' low the same, said bridge piece being angular in cross sect-ion comprising an upright portion and a horizontally disposed portion and providing a housing for the feed rollers, said feed rollers being mounted on a cross rod or shaft journaled 0n uprights rigid with the horizontal portion of said bridge piece, said horizontal portion being formed with de ressions to receive the feed rollers when they are released, said restoring springs being each connected at one end with the upright portions of said bridge piece and extending transversely of' the horizontal portion thereof and above the same.
