may be necessary to arrive at an understand- Y ing of -my invention in its embodiment In the present instance I have included the features of construction of this invention in a machine equipped with work sheet controlling devices of the character disclosed in my above mentioned application, but have only shown such of those devices in the present case as may aid in arriving at an understanding of this invention.
For guiding the two work sheets in their lateral relation, a compound chute or paper table, designated as a whole by the reference numeral 1, is mounted on the carriage frame 2 behind the cylinder or platen 3, said chute having a main section 4, the width of the ledger or' inside sheet a, and a depressed section 5, thewidth of the statement sheet 7).
The sides ,6 of the'main section constitute side edge gages for the inside sheet a, whereas the side 'walls 7 of the depressed section constitute side guides for the narrow. outside or statement sheet I).
In this machine it is frequently desirable t insert the statement sheet 7) around the cylinder or platen 3 from the rear, introducing the sheet in the depressed section 5 of the chute and securing it in position therein. Subsequently a ledger sheet a is introduced from the rear in the chute section 4 and is fed around the cylinder without disturbing the statement sheet. The means for thus controlling the work sheets are disclosed in my above mentioned application but need not be specifically pointed out herein.
Means are provided which enable the work sheets to be fed around the platen from the rear without colliding with or fouling on the auxiliary ribbon 8 or its bail, frame, or carrier, designated as awhole by the reference numeral 9, andwhich enable the larger or wider inside work sheet a to feed invariably behind the auxiliary ribbon and the narrower-or outside work sheet 6 to feed automatically and invariably in front of the auxiliary ribbon. An upwardly extending arm, controll' ig member or contact device 19 is connected to a base 20 which is pivoted at 21 to the associated block or bearing 18, each of said blocks carrying one ofthese pivoted arms. Each arm carries an anti-friction roller 22 and is retained in its operative position, shown in full lines in Fig. 6, by a spring catch 23 secured to its block by ,screws 24. A fixed cam, designated as a whole by the reference numeral 25, forms part of a sheet metal bracket 26 which is secured about centrally of the machine to a iixed portion thereof. In the present instance this bracket is secured in place to the bottom of the forward fixed carriage rail by screws 27. The cam 25, as shown, is adouble cam comprising an inclined surface 28 at each end and an'intermediate dwell 29 forming the high part of the cain. This construction is such that one of the anti-friction rollers 22 will ride forward on an inclined erative at either one or both ends of the 7 travel of the carriage, it is merely necessary to turn either or both of said arms to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 6, thus moving said arm or arms out of coiiperative relation with the cam.
In order that the 'arms may be adjusted along the rock shaft 10, and thus vary the points in the travel of the carriage where they may 'coact with the cam, each block is tapped to receive a set screw 30, the inner end of which is adapted to bear against the face 10 of the shaft and thus fix each block in the position to which it may be adjusted along the rock shaft.
By automatically lifting the auxiliary ribbon 8 a suitable distance above the printing line in the manner described, and as shown in Fig. 3, the two sheets a and Z) pass ing around the platen can pass one to the front and the other tothe rear of said ribbon without touching it, allowing'the ribbon to be received between the sheets.

In order to cause the ledger sheet, or wider work sheet a, to pass invariably behind the auxiliary ribbon, means are provided to hold this sheet close to the platen during its feed ing operation and thus guide its top edge on the platen side of the auxiliary ribbon. These ledger sheet controlling guides are here shown as peculiarly shaped strips 31 of spring steel attached to the forward edges of the two small deflector plates 32 at the ends of the platen and curved upward and toward the center thereof roughly following the curvature of the platen for a certain distance.
It will be seen that with the carriage in inserting position, for example at the extreme left-hand limit of its movement. the natural tendency of the top edge of the statement sheet 6 when inserted around the platen from the rear, is to project forward at a tanget on emerging from between the platen and center deflector33. To obtain the desired result of causing thestatement sheet 6 to feed accurately on the forward side of the auxiliary ribbon I utilize this natural tendency of. the statement sheet and provide means for controlling it, so that it may afterward be brought into proper cooperative relation with the platen; This is done by providingtwo flat guide fingers 34 mounted on collars 35 which are adjustable along, and rigidly fastened by means of set screws 36, to therock shaft 16 carried by the ribbon carrying frame or bail 9. To one end of this rock shaft 16 is rigidly attached a crank arm 3?. A pin 38 on the operating end of this crank arm is engaged in a cam slot 39 in a rigid arm 39 fastened to the carriage frame. hen the ribbon bail is automatically lifted the guide-finger shaft 16 is caused to rock in its bearings a certain distance, and to return to its originalposition when the ribbon bail drops. The rearward ends ,of' these fingers, when the ribbon bail drops back to. its normal operative position, serve to press back the upper or leading portion of the sheet I) and maintain it close to the cylinder in the correct position for writing.
For the convenience ofthe operator in controlling the manifolding on the ledger sheet aa novel device is provided forlifting theauxiliary ribbon into a non-manifolding position, which position is intermediate the normal'manifolding or operative position of the ribbon at the printing line, and the completely lifted or inserting position of said ribbon. When the auxiliary ribbon is in this intermediate or non-manifolding position. it is lifted just far enough so that no part of it "remains in the path of the type. Hence it follows that when said ribbonis in this position the operator can write headings or other.

This result is produced by means of a hand actuated slotted arm or lever 4O pivot? ally mounted at one end, as at 41, on the lefthand bracket 11. The slot 42 in the arm receives a pin 43 projecting from an upright arm 44 on the left-hand arm 12 of the bail 9. The slot in the arm 40 is peculiarly contoured. having a shoulder 45 therein which is so formed that whenthe slotted arm is lifted by means of the finger piece at its outer end, the walls of the slot coacting with theprojecting pin 43 will cause-the-ribbon bail to lift far enough to prevent ma nifolding. And when the arm 40 is so lifted the said shoulder 45in the slot will coact with and support the pin 43, and consequently the bail .9to which the pin is connected, in the desired non-manifolding position. The slotted arm 40 isprovided with a spring 46 so designed that when-the bail is lifted farther than this intermediate nonmanifoiding position, either by hand or automatically through the lifting cam 25, the pin will be released from the supportingshoulder 45 in the slot, allowing the ribbon bail to drop back to its normal or manifolding position under the action of its returning springs 9.
If therefore the operator should temporarily lift the bail to the nonmanitolding position and forget to again restore the bail to the manifolding position after a heading is completed, a movement of the carriage either backward or forward to substantially the full extent of its movement will result in the bail being automatically returned to its manifolding position before proceeding with the writing; 7
I have provided means in the present instance to prevent the auxiliary ribbon from backprinting on the form in frontof the ribbon 8, in this case the statement sheet Z). To avoid this back print previously, it was customary in some instances to employ a short strip of paper or other fabric which was fastened to the guide brackets of the ribbon carrying bail by gluing or sewing the ends of the strip upon themselves. This means has always been extremely unsatisfactory, due to the short life of a non-adjustable short strip and the cumbersome and awkwardmanner of replacing a worn strip with a fresh one. These diiiicuties in the way of eliminating back printing have been completely eliminated in the present invention through the novel use of an uninked shield ribbon 47 wound on a spool 48 mount ed on a rigid arm 44 on the ribbon bailQ. The shield ribbon passes through suitable slots 47 in guides 14 so as to followa path in front of the auxiliary ribbon 8 to a receiving spool 48 similarly mounted on the rigid projection 44 on the opposite side of the bail. "The shield ribbon in passing from one spool 48 to the other passes over the headed guide pins 17.
The double guide openings 15 and 47 formed in the parts 14 of the-ribbon carrying bail permit the auxiliary ribbon 8 and the shield ribbon 47 each to travel through its own guide openings or separate guides. 'The shield ribbon feeding and receiving rotatively adjusted to, in spite of the constant lifting and falling of the auxiliary ribbon carryingbail. By this means a constant tension of the shield ribbon is assured to maintain taut the stretch thereof between the two spools.
W henever a certain portion of the shield ribbon, in protecting the backs of the statement sheet 7) from back printing, has absorbed sufi'icient ink to permeate the shield ribbon fabric, or when that section has become worn, the operator simply winds the shield ribbon from the feeding spool to the receiving spool far enough to bring a fresh "section of the shield ribbon fabric into use.
the upright arms of which provide bear ings for a shaft 53 which extends transversely across the machine and is thus supported by the carriage. This shaft has two ribbon spools 54L loosely mounted thereon. (lne flange of each spool is provided with projections with whic a pivoted clutch member or lever 56 is adapted to engage to lock the associated spool to turn with the shaft. A spring 57 engages one arm of each of the pivoted clutch levers and is adapted to hold it in either the engaging or disengaging position. The right-hand end of the shaft 53 carries a ratchet wheel 58 engaged by a spring detent 58 to pre vent backward rotation. An actuating pawl 59 is pivoted at 60 on a slide 61 adapted to move fore and aft of-the machine. This slide is supported at one end by a headed pin 62 which passes through a slot 63 in the;
slide and fixed on the upright arm of the associated bracket 52. The opposite end of this slide is pivoted at 64 to the upper end of an arm of the usual bell crank 65 of the line spacing mechanism. As the upper end of this lever moves rearwa-rdly it willcause a corresponding movement of the slide, and an actuation of the feed pawl 59 to turn the shaft 53 and thus feed the ribbon. A coiled spring 66 is connected at one end to the pawl 59 and at its opposite end to the slide 61 in order to maintain the engaging end of the pawl in cooperation with the ratchet wheel.
From the foregoing it will be understood that each operation of the line spacing handle 50 is effective to turn the ratchet wheel one or more notches to effect a longitudinal feed of the auxiliary ribbon.
It will also be understoodthat the reversal in the direction of the feed of the ribbon is controlled by the clutch levers 56. Thus by releasing the clutch lever from the full spool and engaging the clutch lever associated with the empty spool, the ribbon will be wound from the full to the empty spool.
The above various but closely related or charge, leaving a, suitable margin at the right and at the left, these forms can be inserted speedily into this collating machine. The above described ribbon bail control merhanism and feed control mechanism will cause the original or outside sheet Z) to feed automatically and invariably in front of the auxiliary ribbon and the duplicate or inside sheet a. in back of it.
The shield ribbon eliminates entirely the objectionable back printing from the bill.
For some kinds of work, including daily entry postings on fold-over forms referred to above, no special chute is needed, and a standard paper feed and stock or standard deflector plate are used. The form is dropped into a standard style of chute of a requisite width upon a set of end-guides preferably, and is fed in the usual manner to the desired writing line. As the carriage is returned to the beginning of the line to write the posting, the auxiliary ribbon drops into manifolding position. After the entry is made the carriage is tabulated again to the end of the line and the fold-over form is pulled out of the machine bottom first.
Certain features disclosed herein are claimed in my above mentioned application from which this case was divided.
Various changes may be made in the construction without departing from my invention and certain of the features thereof may be employed without others.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a' typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, an auxiliary ribbon carrying bail or member carried by said carriage. and means for automatically lifting said bail or member at a predetermined point in the movement of the carriage.
2. In a typewrit-ing machine, the combination of a carriage, an auxiliary ribbon carrying bail or member carried by said carriage, and means for automatically lifting said bail or member at a predetermined point in the movement of the carriage and for automatically dropping said bail or member to means inoperative.

In atypewriting'machine, the combination of a carriage, an auxiliary ribbon carrying bail or member carried by said carriage, coacting contact devices one carried by the carriage and operatively connected to said bail and the other carried by a fixed part of the machine, one of said devices being in the nature of a cam which coacts with the other device to automatically -eliect a lifting of the bail at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage, and means for affording adisplacement of-one of said devices ,to move it out of cooperative relation with the other device and thus render theminoperative.

- 14, In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, an auxiliary ribbon carrying bail or member carried by said carriage and including as a part thereof a rock shaft, a contact device carried by and adjustable alongsaid rock shaft and fixed to turn therewith, and a coacting contact device carried by a fixed part of the machine, one of said contact devices being in the nature of a cam, whereby said ribbon bail is automatically lifted at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage, said point being determined by an adjustment of the first mentioned contact device along said shaft.

In a typewriting machine, the combi nation of a carriage, an auxiliary ribbon carrying bail or member carried by said carriage and including as a part thereof a rock shaft, a support secured to saidshaft to turn therewith, a contact device carried by and movable'on said supportinto and out of operative position, and a cooperative contact device carried by a fixed part of the machine, one of said contact devices being in the nature of a cam which is effective to swing the bail.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, an auxiliary ribbon carrying bail. or member carried by said carriage and including as a part thereof a rock shaft, a block carried by and adjustable along said shaft and fixed to turn therewith, a contact device pivoted on said block to swing into and out of operative position, and a coacting contact device carried by a fixed part of the machine, said contact devices' having a camming action one on the other to turn the rock shaft and swing the ribbon carrying bail and elevate theribbon carried thereby above the printing line.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, an auxiliary ribbon bail or carrier 'arried' thereby, and inanually operated means operable at will for moving said auxiliary ribbon carrier to and holding it in a non-manifolding position, said means comprising a hand actuated lever with a pin and slot connection between said lever and carrier, one wall of the slot forming alocking shoulder against which the pin is adapted to seat itself to lock the bail in its elevatedor nonananilolding position, a further upward movement of the bail freeing the pin from the locking shoulder and permitting thc bail to return to normal position."

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a ribbon carrier carried thereby for normally maintaining'a ribbon at the printing'line, and automati cally operating means for actuating said carrier to,'move the ribbon to'an abnormal position where the leading ends of two work sheets fedinto'the machine will pass to opposite sides of the ribbon, and for returning the ribbon carrier and ribbon to normal position of the carriage 'in'its line of travel determining whenthe carrier shall be moved to and held in'the abnormal positionand when they shall be returned to the normal position. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, means carried thereby for carrying anauxiliary ribbon,'means in the form of along fabric or shield" ribbon for eliminating back printing of the auxiliary ribbon on'a worksheet, andmeans for maintaining indefinitely a section only of said shield ribbon in use.

In atypewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, means in the formof a strip of fabric oishield ribbon for eliminatingbac'k printing of the auxiliary ribbon on the work sheet, and two spools on which said shield ribbon is wound, each of which is maintained indefinitely in the position to which it is rotated and the length of shield ribbon in use may be changed when desired.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, means carried thereby for carrying an auxiliary ribbon, means in the form of a strip of fabricor shield ribbon for eliminating back printing of the auxiliary ribbon on the work sheet, two spools on which said shield ribbon is wound, and a tension spring cooperative with each of said spools to hold it in the position to which it is rotated and to maintain taut the length of ribbon between said spools.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, an ink ribbon carrier carried thereby and movable thereon to move the ink ribbon to and away from the printing line, a shield ribbon to prevent back printing, and spools which carry said shield ribbon and which are carried by said ink ribbon carrier.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, an ink ribbon carrier carried thereby, automatically operating means for shifting said carrier to move the ink ribbon to and away from the printing line, a shield ribbon in front of and parallel with the ink ribbon, and spools for said shield ribbon, said spools and shield ribbon being carried by and movable with said carrier when the latter is shifted.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen car ried thereby, means by which an auxiliary ribbon is carried by the carriage, and means for guiding the free leading ends of two work sheets introduced into the machine in the rear of the platen to opposite sides of the auxiliary ribbon.
30. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, means by which an auxiliary ribbon is carried by the carriage, means for guiding the free leading ends of two work sheets introduced into the machine in the rear of the platen to opposite sides of said auxiliary ribbon, and automatically operating means for controlling a portion of said guiding means.
31. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen car ried thereby, means by which an auxiliary ribbon is carried by the carriage, and adjustble guide fingers for guiding the leading edge of one of two superposed work sheets a V in front of the auxiliary ribbon.
32. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, means by which an auxiliary ribbon is carried by the carriage, adjustable guide fingers for guiding the leading edge of one of two superposed work sheets in front of the auxiliary ribbon, and automaticallyoperating means for causing said guide fingers to assume positions which are operative for the purpose specified and for moving them to inoperative positions.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, paper controlling means, means by which an auxiliary ribbon is carried by the carriage and adapted to be interleaved between superposed work sheets on the platen, and automatically operating actuating means for controlling said paper con trolling means and auxiliary ribbon to cause a separation of the leading ends of the work sheets and a lifting of the auxiliary ribbon from its normal operative position between said work sheets when the carriage reaches a predetermined point in its travel.
34:. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, paper controlling means, means by which an auxiliary ribbon is carried by the carriage and adapted to be interleaved between superposed work sheets on the platen, and automatically operating actuating means for controlling, said paper controlling means and auxiliary ribbon to cause a separation of the leading ends of the work sheets and a lifting of the auxiliary ribbon from its normal operative position between said work sheets when the carriage reaches a predetermined point in its travel, said automatically operating means including an adjustable device whereby the point in the travel of the carriage where such 'means are automatically operated may be predetermined and varied at will.
85. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, paper controlling means, means by which an auxiliary ribbonis carried by the carriage and adapted to be interleaved be tween superposed work sheets on the platen, automatically operating actuating means for controlling said paper controlling means and auxiliary ribbon to cause a separation of the leading ends of the work sheets and a lifting of the auxiliary ribbon from its normal operative position between said work sheets when the carriage reaches a predetermined point in its travel, and means by which said automatically operating means may be rendered inoperative.
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, paper controlling means, means by which an auxiliary ribbon is carried by the carriage and adapted to be interleaved between superposed work sheets on the platen, automatically operating actuating means for controlling said paper controlling means and auxiliary ribbon to cause a separation of the leading ends of the Work sheets and a lifting of the auxiliary ribbon from its normal operative position between said Work sheets when the carriage reaches a prede- 5 erniined point in its travel, said automatically operating means including an adjustable device whereby the point in the travel of the carriage Where such means are automatically operated may be predetermined l0 and varied at will, and means by which said automatically operating means may be rendcred inoperative.
