These guiding devices may comprise the usual rolls which run upon the under surface of the platen, and a. guiding plate or apron which curves around the under side of the platen, both said rolls and apron being mounted so as to be capable of being dropped downwardly from the platen in order to be brought into silinement or operative register with the chute or deflector. Above the platen is provided a gaging tablet upon which the leading edge of the work sheet may be gaged after its bottom edge has been inserted around the platen as aforesaid; and while the sheet is held to the gage, the bottom pressure rolls may be restored to the platen so as to hold the sheet and permit the latter to be advanced indepcndently of the gage. Pressure rolls are also arranged to run upon the platen between the platen and said gage tablet, and the latter is preferably cut away to afford a clearance for the roll structures. The gage tablet is adjustable along the platen and isalso movable by means of a finger-piece upwardly away from the platen (together with the top rolls) and to permit the introduction of a work sheet between the platen and said rolls and tablet.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective plan of an Underwood widecarriagc front-strike writing machine provided with the present improvements, and showing the parts ready for the insertion of sheets at the front of the platen. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation, showing the top pressure rolls and the top gage plate swung away from the platen to permit the work sheet to be carried back over the platen. At this figure, the lower pressure rolls are shown in working positions, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of the pressureroll mechanism, showing particularly the guides and supports for the paper-guiding apron which curves around under the platen.

One of the objects of the invention being to facilitate the introduction of the work sheets at the front of the platen, the guiding apron 25, which curves around the under side of the platen in conformity therewith, is arranged to drop, especially at its front edge, whenever the pressure rolls 10, 12 arereleased, as at Fig. 4, so as to leave an openingof substantial size between the platen. and the front edge of said guiding apron for the introduction of sheets. This guiding apron may be unattached at either of its front and rear edges; but it may have at each end a guiding yoke 26 to set down loosely over the rod 6, and at its front and rear edges it may rest on small rolls 27 on the shafts 11, 13; this guiding plate being recessed at its front and rear edges at 28 to accommodate the pressure rolls, Fig. 3. In operation, the carriage is movecl to the left as for as it will go, thereby bringing into use the introductory guide plate or chute 30 at the front of the platen. When the record sheet 39 is employed, the work sheets or statements 39 do not need to be .introducedbetween the rolls 44 and the platen 1, but instead may ride up over the top of the gage 40. However, it is obvious that the rolls 44 may be swung up while the bottom rolls 1O 12 are in workin ositions as at Fig.2, so that the bottom rolls may hold the record sheet 39, while the top rolls 44 are released to admit the statement 39.
The work sheet 39 may,-of-course, consist of several blanks with interposed carbons.
Variations maybe resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. Having thus described my invention, I claim: Y
1. The combination of a revoluble platen, pressure rolls running upon the under side of the same, means to release said pressure rolls, a paper-guiding apron curving around the underside of the platen and connected to be dropped when said rolls are released, and a separate sloping stationary deflector or guide forward of the platen and permanently spaced apartfrom the platen in'position to cooperate with said apron, when the latter is dropped, to guide the bottom edges of sheets downwardly and backwardly under the platen.
2 The combination of a revoluble platen, pressure rolls running upon the under side of the same, means to releasesaid pressure rolls, a paper-guiding apron curving around the under side of the platen and connected to be dropped when said rolls arereleased, and a separate stationary sloping deflector or guide forward of theplaten and permanently'spadednpart from the platen in position tdcoiiperate' with said apron, when the latter is' dropped, to guide the bottom edges of sheetsldruvnwardly and backwardly under the platen; said sloping deflector or shell mounted upon the fixed frame of the machine, and said platen mounted upon a carriage.
3. The combination of a revoluble platen, pressure rolls running upon the under side of the same, means to release said pressure rolls, a paper-guiding apron curving around the under side of the platen and connected to is dropped, to guide the bottom edges. of

5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a revoluble platen mounted on said carriage, feed rolls to run upon the platen, yielding means upon said carriage normally pressing said rolls against the platen, a finger-piece upon said carriage to release said rolls, means upon the framework of the machine to release said rolls when the platen has been carried beyond the printing field, whereby when the carriage is in the printing field the fingar-piece may be manipulated at any time to release the sheets, and whereby when the carriage has traveled beyond the printing field the work-sheet may be pulled out and another substituted without manipulating said fingenpiece, and a guide mounted upon the frame work of the machine to cooperate with the platen when the Carriage has traveled to roll-releasing position, for cooperalion with said platen to guide sheets introduced bottom end foremost down around the fron s de o the platen- 6. The combination of a revoluble platen, pressure rolls running thereon, a carriage for said platen, means dependent upon the movement of the carriage for automatically releasing said rolls, paper-guiding means extending around said platen and connectedto be released together with said rolls, and a fixed loping deflector or guide so mountedand permanently spaced from the platen that it can cooperate with said paper-guiding means whenever the carriage is moved to position to release said rolls.

The combination of a carriag a revoluble' platen, pressure rolls running on the platen, a fixed cam, roll-releasing means'on the carriage and including a part to engage said fixed cam, paper-guiding means upon the under side of said platen, and a slopingdefieetor or chute upon the machine frame so mounted and permanently spaced from the plate that it can cooperate with said paper'guiding means whenever the carriage is moved to roll-releasing position.

The combination of a revoluble platen, a paper-gaging tablet in proximity to the platen above the printing point and pro vided with means movable into and out of position to gage the top. edge of a work.- sheet, means in front of and under the platen for guiding a sheet bottom foremost downwardly and backwardly around the platen, preparatory to gaging the top edge of said sheeton said tablet, and pressure rolls to run on the platen below the printing point, movable away from the platen to permit the insertion and gaging of the sheet,

The combination of a revoluble platen, a paper-gaging tablet in prozrimity to the platen'above the printing point and pro vided with means to gage the top edge or": a work-sheet, means in front of and under the platen for guiding a sheet bottom foremost downwardly and backwardly around the platen, preparatory to gaging" the top edge of said sheet on sand tablet, pressure rolls to run on the platen below the printing point, movable arm from the platen to permit the insertion an engagement of the sheet, and

The combination with a platen, of a rock-shaft extending therealong and having a longitudinal groove, brackets having spring-pressed keys engaging said groove and rotatable upon said rock-shaft independently thereof, ears on said brackets, a paper-ga ing tablet adjustably pivoted on said ears and firmly held thereby in adjusted positions, a finger-piece to rock said shaft together with said tablet away from the platen, and means to hold said rock-shaft in normal position; said tablpt adjustable along said rock-shaft. The combination with a lplaten, of a rock-shaft extendingtherealong and having a longitudinal groove, brackets having spring-pressed keys engaging said groove and rotatable upon said rock-shaft independently thereof, ears on said brackets, a paper-gaging tablet adjustably pivoted on said ears and firmly held thereby in adjusted positions, a finger-piece to rock said shaft together with said tablet away from the platen, means to hold said rock-shaft in normal pt)- sition, and roll-carrying arms also mounted on said rock-shaft to be swung away from and back to the platen together with said gaging tablet; sai d tablet and said roll-carrying arms adjustable along said rock shaft.
20. The combination with a rotatable platen and a platen frame, of a rock shaft journalcd on the ends of said frame, pressure rolls carried by said shaft, and a paper gaging tablet on said shaft.
21. The combination with a rotatable platen and a platen frame, of a shaft located over the platen and supported on the ends of said frame,pressure rolls carried by said shaft and bearing against the platen, and a paper-gaging tablet mounted on said shaft.
22. The combination with arotatable platen and a platen frame, of a rock shaft mounted on the frame above the platen, pressure rolls carried by the rock shaft and bearing against the platen, and a paper gaging tablet supported on said shaft and located above the pressure rolls.
23. The combination with a rotatable platen and a platen frame, of a shaft located over the platen and parallel therewith, and a paper-gaging tablet mounted on said shaft with its paper-supporting face substantially in a plane tangent to the platen.
24. The combination with a rotatable platen and a platen frame, of a shaft located over the platen and parallel therewith, a paper-gaging tablet mounted on said shaft with its paper-supporting face substantially in a plane tangent to the platen, prcssurel rolls carried by said shaft and located behind said plane, and means to rock the shaft and carry said rolls away from the platen. 25. The combination with a revoluble platen having a guiding apron normally in operative position relatively thereto, of an introductory deflector permanently stationed in position in advance of the forward surface of said platen to guide work-sheets to said" apron, and means for moving said apron away from said platen in position to receive work-sheets from said deflector.

The combination with a rcvoluble platen having pressure rolls normally in contact therewith, iii an introductory deflector permanently stationed in position in advance of the forward surface of said platen to guide work-sheetsto said pressure rolls, and means for moving said press-ore rolls away from-said platen in position to receive worksheets from said deflector.

The combination with a rcvoluble platen having a guiding apron and pressure rolls normally in operative position rela lively tl'iereto, of an introductory deflector permanently stationed in position in advance of the forward surface of said platen to guide work-sheets to said apron and pres sure rolls, and means for moving said apron and pressure rolls together from said platen in position to receive work-sheets from said deflector.

The combination with a revoluble platen having a guiding apron normally in operative position relatively thereto, of an introductory deflector permanently stationed in position in advance of the forward surface of said platen to guide work-shoots to said apron, means for moving said apron away from said platen in position to receive work-sheets from said deflector, and a carriage for said platen, said deflector being mounted at one side of the printing point so 20 platen,

30. In a front-strike typewriting machine having a framework, the combination of a revoluble platen, a carriage for said paper-guiding means extending around the under side of the platen to the front thereof, and an introductory chute mounted upon the framework of the machine in front of the platen, and displaced wholly to one side of the printing point in position to be of use when the carriage is at only one extreme portion of its travel; said platen having a certain length of printing field which agrees with the length of said chute, to register and cooperate therewith,
and said carriage being movable to carry all of said length of printing field far to one side of the printing center, to bring said length of printing field and chute into proper relationship, so that a sheet introduced by means of the chute may entirely cover said length of printing field.
31. In a front-strike typewriting machine having a framework, the combination of a revoluble platen, a carriage for said platen,
paper-gui ing means extendin around the under side of the platen to the. front thereof,
and an introductory chute mounted upon the framework of the machine in front-of the platen and displaced wholly to one side of the printing point in position to be of use when the carriage is at only one extreme portion of its travel; said platen having a certain lungth of )rinting field which agrees f said chute, to register and cooperatetherewith, and said carriage being movable to carry all of said length of printing field far to one side of the printing center, to bring said length of printing field 5S and chute into proper relationship, so that a sheet introduced by means of the chute may entirely cover said length of printing field, said paper-guidlng means being releasable, and said chute being in position to coco operate with said paper-guiding means only when the latter is released.

In a front-strike typewriting machine of, and an introductory chute mounted upon the framework of the machine in front of the platen, said platen having a front feed printing field adapted in the extreme movement of the carriage in one direction to enter the path of said introductory chute and receive the work-sheet therefrom.
