In a typographical line-composing machine, means are provided to slow down the return or effective transfer movement of a member for transferring matrices or spacebands from one position to another in the machine, so as to delay the completion of the transfer operation until after the end of the cam cycle. The transfer lever 25, Fig. 1, for transferring the line from the first elevator 14 to the second elevator 17 is pivoted at 24 and controlled by a cam 20 acting on a roller 22, and is also connected by a pin-and-slot connection 34, 33 and a threaded adjusting member 35 with the spaceband lever 36 so as to move the latter positively towards the second elevator. The matrices are raised by the second elevator before the end of the stroke of the lever 25, which then pushes the spacebands further to the right. During the return stroke of the lever 25, the lever 36 transfers the spacebands to the magazine under the action of a spring, the movement being slowed down by a dash-pot 47, the power of which is adjustable by a member 57. The second elevator 17, Fig. 7, is operated by a cam 62 through a roller 72, and by a spring 63. The cam 62 comprises two relatively movable parts 75, 76 (see Group XXIV), whereby the transfer movement of the elevator is slowed down. The movement of the distributer shifter lever 104, Fig. 12, into receiving position is synchronized with the upward movement of the elevator being controlled by the cam part 76 by means of pins 94 extending through openings in the cam part 75 and any intervening cams such as 95, 96 to a cam 93 which operates the lever 104 through a follower 97.
