Clamping matrices.- In a typographical linecasting machine provided with a pair of lineclamping jaws movable one towards the other for quadding or centring by a vertical rod operated from a camshaft during a machine cycle to effect in sequence a jaw-closing movement of the rod in one direction and then a line-squeeze pressure of the rod in the same direction, there is provided a clamping device for engaging the rod momentarily to prevent its return movement after release of the linesqueeze pressure on the rod, operation of the clamping device being effected by means of a solenoid in an electric circuit having a control switch operated automatically during the machine cycle. When a solenoid 20, Fig. 3, is energized by the closing of a switch 21, Fig. 4, a lever 18 engaging a steel collar 17 presses a brass stud 16 against the vertical rod 4 to prevent movement thereof. The switch is closed by two cam segments, one of which is shown at 23, on a cam wheel 22 on the main cam shaft, the arrangement of the segments being such that the rod is clamped at the end of its jaw-closing movement until the beginning of its line-squeeze movement, and again at the end of the linesqueeze movement until the first elevator has risen about an inch and the end matrices have wiped away any deposit of type metal from the clamping faces of the jaws. The solenoid is operated by 18 volts D.C. with a selenium rectifier in parallel with it to prevent sparking at the switch. Specification 724,557, [Group XXII], is referred to.
