Abstract
473,211. Type - bar - making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd.,BILLINGTON, M. E., [Representative of BILLINGTON, J. E.], and SCOTT, R. H. May 26, 1936, No. 14830. [Class 100 (iii)] Quadding - apparatus.-Means controlled by the length of the matrix line are provided for connecting a line-clamping jaw to a quadding-mechanism, in order to move it inwards to clamp the line. In one arrangement, the known stop 2, Fig. 1, on the assemblerslide 1, which contacts with a fixed abutment 3 to limit the movement of the slide, is extended to engage with an additional stop 4, adjustably mounted on the end of a sliding bar 5. The bar 5 contacts with a member 6, sliding on the vice-cap and carrying an interponent 9, which normally lies in the path of a projection 14 on the first elevator. Below the interponent is a plunger 13, connected to an arm 11 on a shaft 10, the manual adjustment of which effects the connection of the vice-jaw to a vertically movable rod, in order to effect a quadding movement of the jaw. If the matrix line is short of full length by more than a predetermined amount, say three ems, the descent of the first elevator depresses the interponent 9 and the plunger 13, and rotates the shaft 10, so as to bring the quadding- mechanism into action. If the line is of full length, the interponent 9 is moved out of the path of the elevator, and the line is not quadded. The interponent and the shaft 10 are returned to normal position after the casting by the rise of the first elevator. In a modification, the assembly of a short line brings the quadding- mechanism into action to effect either right or left hand quadding, or centring of the line, as previously determined by hand. The plunger 13, instead of being directly connected to an arm on the shaft 10, depresses a bar 24, Fig. 2, carrying a horizontally sliding block 25, which acts through a lever 23 to move a rack 21 gearing with a pinion 22 on the shaft 10. The block 25 is adjusted by hand, in order to act upon the lever 23 at different points, and to determine right or left hand quadding or centring. The quadding connections may be controlled through the agency of the linedelivery carriage, an abutment on which moves the interponent 9 into inoperative position when a line of full length is delivered. In another form, the quadding is controlled by an abutment, which rests in the path of the line-stop in the first elevator. The setting of the quadding-mechanism to determine right or left hand quadding or centring is effected by a hand-adjusted cam 47, Fig. 5, mounted on the first elevator and co-operating with a roller 59. The cam is set, so that either of two cam-surfaces 64, 65 will engage the roller 59 during the descent of the elevator. A third action of the cam is obtained by turning a pivoted portion 66 into operative position, so as to form an extension of the cam-surface 65 and to effect a greater movement of the roller 59. When the line is of full length, the movement of the abutment in the path of the line-stop effects a facewise movement of the cam 47, so that it does not contact with the roller 59.
