[Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XVI] A dashpot for cushioning movement of the elevator of a typographical compsosing and slug-casting machine [see Group (XVI)] comprises of an oil cylinder K<SP>19</SP>, the piston K<SP>20</SP> of which has a passage K<SP>21</SP>, through which oil flows from one end of the cylinder to the other. The piston contains a vertically sliding valve K<SP>22</SP>, which is supported by a spring and has a passage through it, which registers with the passage K<SP>21</SP> in the piston when the valve is in the upper position. The piston is reciprocated by a lever K<SP>27</SP> and a slotted link K<SP>31</SP> from the segment K<SP>9</SP>. As the elevator nears an extreme position, the piston is moved by the slotted link K<SP>31</SP>, so that oil flows through it. A lip on the valve K<SP>22</SP> then encounters one of a pair of pivoted cam-plates K<SP>33</SP>, K<SP>34</SP>, which are held against stops by a connecting spring. The valve is thereby cammed down, so as to reduce the size of the oil passage through the piston, and to retard increasingly the flow of oil. Towards the end of the piston stroke, the lip on the valve escapes from the cam-plate, and the oil passage is enlarged in readiness for the return stroke of the elevator. During the return stroke, the pivoted cam-plate is pushed aside, and the other cam-plate acts to depress the valve K<SP>22</SP>.
