Abstract

763,557. Hydraulic shock absorbers. NEWTON & BENNETT, Ltd. Nov. 16, 1955 [Nov. 16, 1954], No. 33096/54. Class 108(3). The invention relates to hydraulic shock absorbers of the type comprising a piston 12 carried by a piston rod 11 and operating so as to displace liquid in a cylinder 10. According to the invention, hydraulic stop mechanism for the piston 12 comprises complementary separable parts 16, 13, adapted in combination to form an auxiliary piston when brought together, the part 16 being attached to the piston rod 11 and the part 13 being resiliently supported in the cylinder away from but adjacent the relevant end thereof. The arrangement is such that the parts 16, 13, combine to form the auxiliary piston at the end of the cylinder in such a way as to provide a hydraulic stop in advance of the main piston 12 so that stresses from the action of the hydraulic stop are not imposed on the main piston 12, or on its attachment to the piston rod 11. As shown, large-bore passages 16a are formed in the part 17. During the main part of the stroke of the piston rod 11, liquid can thus flow freely from one side of the part 16 to the other. When the latter engages the part 13 the passages 16a are closed by the part 13 and liquid is trapped in the end of the cylinder. The passages 16a may alternatively be formed in the member 13. Packing 16b may be dispensed with, so as to provide a shock absorber action due to flow around the periphery of the part 16. Some passages (not shown) may be provided in either of the parts 16, 13, which are not closed when these parts come into engagement.
