[Classes 113 (i) and 113 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and X] In the manufacture of built up structural members from sections of girders &c. severed by cutting along a sinuous line and subsequently welding, an oxyacetylene flame is used for severing at least one of the sections. In Fig. 1 is shown a rolled steel member of I-section severed by a line 5 symmetrical about the axis 8 projecting parts 10 being welded at 11 to form a member with a deeper web than the original and with apertures 12. In using a channel beam one section may be arranged with its flange in a reversed position to the flange of the other section.. By arranging the axis 21 of the line of severance at an angle to the axis of the beam as in Fig. 11 a tapering beam 6, Fig. 12, may be built up after welding at 11. In Figs. 13 and 14 is shown a ship's hatch frame formed from a flanged member 18 and plates 23, 24, the plates being severed along a sinuous line having its axis inclined to the edge of the plates. The section 18 is obtained from an I-beam. Welding takes place at 25 and 11. Flanges 20 also are welded on to the members. In Fig. 15 is shown a ship's hull with double bottom, comprising inner and outer shells 27, 28 spaced apart by transverse plates 29, 291 and longitudinal plates 31. The built up beams are used for hatch beams.
