Abstract
487,467. Making girders. SPANNER, E. F. Aug. 27, 1937, No. 23522. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group X] Uniting by fusion.-A built-up girder comprises a strip of steel plate A forming a wide flange to which is welded the web of an element B<1> of T- or L-section, or of a bulb plate element, the edge of the web being cut to form castellations the sides of which are inclined at a substantial angle to the axis of the compound girder. The welding may be effected by fillet welds M or by connecting pieces D welded on. A number of such girders may be arranged so that the plates A provide a plane load-carrying diaphragm. The element B<1> may be obtained by cutting H or 'channel section girders along a line L, Fig. 9, the section being cut along a line of which the direction is inclined to the axis when it is desired to produce a girder, Fig. 11, in which the depth increases progressively along the length.
