Abstract

1452063 Welding by fusion; making parapet posts BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO Ltd 31 Oct 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 47351/72 Headings B3R and B3A A joint between a flange and an edge of a web, of a metallic structural member particularly of aluminium or aluminium alloy, is effected by insertion of said web edge into a recess in the flange and by welding (e.g. inert gas-shielded arc) from the side of the flange remote from the web. As shown in Fig. 5, the flange comprises two recesses 16, 17 respectively locatingly loosely accommodating the web edge, and allowing welding access and, preferably, receiving filler metal. The flange and web may be extruded, cast, machined or forged, or formed from pressed or rolled section. In Fig. 6 (not shown), a strip flange has an offset portion to provide the web edge receiving recess 16. In Fig. 7 (not shown), a strip flange is provided with parallel ridges defining the recess 16. To produce tapered aluminium parapet posts 20, Fig. 2, an I beam is cut along its length at an angle to its axis to form two post members each comprising a flange 21 and web 22, and the free edge of the web of each member has welded thereto a flange 23 by the method of the invention. Each post is welded to a base 24 and carries three rails 25.
