Abstract

964,743. Welding by fusion; jointing. J. BERTELS. May 9, 1962 [May 16, 1961; July 5, 1961], No. 17846/62. Headings B3R and B3V. A light metal member is connected to a galvanized portion of an iron or steel member using gas - shielded arc welding with a light metal welding wire, the arc being maintained with the light metal part. Butt or T-joints may be so made. An aluminium tube 8, Fig. 4, is connected by a pair of aluminium fillet weld deposits 12 to the hot-dip galvanized portion 11 of a steel strip 10 welded to an angle 9. In another form of joint, Figs. 6, 7, 8, for connecting an aluminium plate 21 to a steel plate 16, the steel plate 16 is riveted or welded to a steel strip 14, 24 having an edge prepared with a W or stepped profile. Holes 20 bored through a narrow central portion 19 of the edge allow sufficient shielding gas, e.g. argon, to pass to and shield the reverse side of the work when the first side is welded. The profiled edge of the strip 14, 24 is galvanized after the holes 20 are formed. Alternatively in place of the holes 20 the centre portion 19 is formed with recesses 23 which may be of dovetail shape. The holes 20 or recesses 23 besides allowing passage of argon strengthen the joint by the mechanical interlock formed with the solidified weld metal. In a modification, Fig. 9, the connecting strip is formed by an apertured strip 27 welded or riveted in a U-shaped member 25 prior to galvanizing. In a further modification the profiled edge of the strip is formed with bevels which may be grooved or knurled. The process may be used to connect a mild steel plate to a plate of aluminium - 3% magnesium using an aluminium - 5% silicon welding wire.
