Abstract
1,035,381. Welding by fusion. W. H. A. ROBERTSON & CO. Ltd. Feb. 3, 1965 [Jan. 7, 1964], No. 663/64. Heading B3R. In a method of joining two or more strips of metal 10, 11 together at their ends to form a larger strip the adjacent ends of a pair of strips are brought together in an abutting relationship and fused together by simultaneously welding along the two opposite sides of the joint without adding to either side of the joint any electrode or filler metal. Gasshielded tungsten electrode welding torches 12, 13 are arranged on each side of the joint to effect the fusing and they are offset with respect to each other in a direction parallel to the length of the joint. The shielding gas is wholly or mostly inert gas. Oxy-acetylene atomic hydrogen torches may be used. The method can be applied to the joining of strips made of, for example, stainless steel, alloy steels, mild steel, nickel and its alloys and aluminium and its alloys.
