Abstract

548,992. Uniting by fusion. MOSS, J. A. Sept. 10, 1941, No. 11597. [Class 83 (iv)] In electric arc welding the faces 1, Fig. 1 to be welded may be first provided with one or more interfaced layers of weld metal 3 and then with one or more deposited beads 2 of weld metal, the beads projecting from and extending longitudinally of the interface layers to define the root or base of a welding groove. In a modification for wider gaps between the faces one or more beads 2a, Fig. 8, may be directly deposited on the faces of the parts and one or more beads 2b are then deposited on the first beads to define the base of the groove. In a further modification, Fig. 6, for high speed welding of thick plates, beads are deposited directly on the faces 1 of each part, the beads extending substantially across the thickness of the faces and forming a constriction at each side constituting the base of the welding groove. The bead metal or alloy may be the same or different from that of the parent metal or weld filler metal. The parent metal may comprise wrought or cast iron or carbon or alloy steel. When the beads are provided on both faces they are arranged to coincide. The faces 1 of a butt joint may be at right angles to the surfaces of the plates with the beads 2, which may be continuous or staggered, arranged adjacent one edge or at any intermediate point, or may be bevelled to produce a V or double-V gap, the beads being arranged at the narrowest point. The interface layers may be of uniform thickness or may be of variable thickness so as to provide the constriction 4. The layers may be of a metal or alloy different from the parent metal. A metal plate of high carbon steel may be coated with one or more layers of soft mild steel and the weld filler metal may be of high tensile alloy steel. Corner, fillet or T joints may be similarly effected. The beads may be ground, filed or machined after deposition.
