Abstract
527,107. Uniting by fusion. UNITED STEEL COS., Ltd., and REEVE, L. March 31, 1939, No. 10123. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In fusion welding plates or sections, one or both of the parts is provided with a number of integral projections which are pressed against the opposing part, leaving a gap therebetween so as to ensure adequate penetration and fusion of the subsequently applied weld metal at the root of the joint. The joint may be a double or single V-butt joint or a half butt between a plate and a rolled flat or a point between webs and rolled-in stalks carried by rolled flange plates. The projections may be of conical form, and one-eighth to one-twelfth of an inch in length and one-sixteenth to three-sixteenths of an inch in height, formed with flattened points and spaced from 4 inches to 3 feet apart. They may be formed by hot rolling, by shaped rolls which at the same time form the bevelled edges on the joints, or bevels and projections may be formed by shaping a previously rolled section by a chipping-chisel, milling cutter, flame cutter &c. In other forms the projections may be fusion welded to the edges and ground &c. to height, or may be forced from the bevelled edges by cold upsetting. In forming a double V-joint, Fig. 2, the projections 14 are formed on the ends of the bevelled faces 13a. A single V-joint may be similarly formed. In joining a plate 17 to a rolled flat 18 the projections may be formed either on the flat 18, Fig. 7, or on the plate. In joining a flange plate 20 provided with a bevelled stalk 21a to a bevelled web 19 the projections may be formed either on the stalk or web. In another form the web may have a square end. In the welding operation the weld metal is deposited in the welding groove including the gaps, the projections being incorporated into the fused metal.
