[Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion casting: composite articles.- In making a welded T-joint in the manufacture of constructional sections such as T or I beams, girders &c. in which two flange plates are disposed with one edge of one plate adjacent to but spaced from one edge of the other plate, the two edges being disposed adjacent one edge of a web plate and the three plates welded together at the three edges, backing members are disposed below the joint before welding so as to shape the fillets at the joint. Thus the joint may be completed with equal and symmetrical fillets in a single welding run. The flange plates a, b may be placed with their edges d, e spaced apart on the edge f of the web plate c so as to form a channel h into which metal is melted from a welding rod m. Removable copper or like backing blocks i are placed in the two angles formed by each flange plate and the web plate, the blocks being chamfered or otherwise shaped at k to correspond with the shape of the fillets n. In a modification the upper edge f of the web plate may be disposed between the adjacent edges d, e, of the flange plates. The blocks i may be of the same length as the plates or may comprise short blocks moved along the joint during welding, which may be effected by the electric arc. The flange plates may be set up slightly during assembly so that when the fillets n contract the flanges are at right angles to the web.
