Abstract
571,618. Uniting by fusion. WHITE & CO., Ltd., J. S., and HURST, O. Nov. 8, 1943, No. 18509. [Class 83 (iv)] In arc-welding two parts of a structure such as two plates or a plate to a stiffener behind it, particularly in ship construction, the parts, then immovable, are held with their surfaces in contact and overlapping, but not pressed together and an arc is struck by an electrode, the arc passing through the two parts where their surfaces are in contact, the electrode then being moved over the surface of the adjacent part to form a trench of molten metal of such depth as to extend through one part and into the other part behind it, the trench following a straight or curved line and being filled by additional weld metal as the electrode is moved along the work. The trench is at a distance from the edges of the parts, one run of weld thus replacing the two runs required in fillet welding. The lapped parts A, B, which are held with their surfaces in contact without applying more pressure than is necessary to maintain them in correct position may thus be welded by an arc struck through the two plates to form a crater C which is filled with molten weld metal D, the arc being moved along to form a trench filled with weld metal. A plate G may be similarly welded at L to a stiffener with a single lateral flange H<1> or With a thickened edge portion. According to the Provisional Specification, the joint may consist of a series of separate craters filled with weld metal. Referenee has been directed by the Comptroller to U.S.A. Specification 1,967,728.
