Abstract

534,316. Ships framing; bulkheads. ISHERWOOD, Sir W. Jan. 24, 1940, No. 1478. [Class 113 (ii)] In a ship construction comprising transverse and longitudinal bulkheads 3, 2 having horizontal corrugations the adjacent edges are connected by an interposed beam of the character of an I-beam 7 so that as shown in Fig. 11 the bulkhead sections are respectively attached, for example, by welding, to the web and the end flanges of the I-beam. I-beams may also be interposed between and connect the sections of a bulkhead or ordinary vertical stiffeners may be employed for this purpose. The corrugations which may become deeper towards the bottom are confined between the width of the web. The bulkheads are attached to the sides, deck and bottom by a similar I-beam construction. In this case the longitudinals 75, 76 as shown in Fig. 14 are intercostal and are connected by a doubling plate 78 passed through and welded to a slot in the I- beam 3.
