Abstract
549,807. Bulkheads. BETHLEHEM STEEL CO. Aug. 15, 1941. No. 10431. Convention date, July 9, 1940. [Clas 113 (ii)] Tankers are provided with walls the intersecting edges of which are welded in a water-tight manner to a connecting bar or plate which is of uniform cross-section throughout its width. As shown in Fig. 6, the longitudinal walls 15, provided with horizontal grooves, are butt-jointed to the faces of the bar 40 the ends of which project beyond the walls. The transverse walls 17, 18 are provided with corrugations with tapered ends and are welded to one face of the projecting parts of the bar. The bar may be considerably wider than the depth of the corrugations. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the transverse walls 17<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>1</SP> are butt-jointed to the edges of the bar 43, the edges being flush with the longitudinal walls. Fig. 8 shows a form in which the longitudinal walls have tapered corrugations and the walls are butt-jointed to the faces of the bar 44 which is of square cross-section.
