Abstract
476,867. Composite structural members. HENDERSON, A. May 16, 1936, No. 13945. [Class 20 (ii)] Composite beams and like structural members are formed from angle-bars with perforated flanges and connecting plates which form the webs of the beams, the connecting plates having rows of spaced apertures of the same spacing as those in the angle-bars, the distances between the rows also being integral multiples of the aperture spacing, so that the elements may be variably joined to form openwork beams of different depths and sizes. The angle-bar 10, Fig. 2, is shown having perforated flanges, and rectangular connecting plates 13, Fig. 3, with rows of holes 14 of similar pitch, and the distances between the rows integral multiples of this pitch, so that the angle-bars may be joined by the plates to form various depths of openwork girders. Figs. 6 and 8 show two forms of girder of different depths formed by reversing the connecting plates. Larger rectangular connecting plates with similarly pitched holes and rows give a further range of adjustment for depth. The apertures 32, Fig. 17, may be positioned in each flange of an anglebar 31 a distance inwardly from the edge equal to the pitch, and the connecting plates 30 for use with these angle-bars are provided with multiple rows of apertures, so that they may connect the angle-bars in various ways, as shown, for example, in Figs. 20 and 26. Beams 53 may be connected to columns 50 directly, as shown for example in Fig. 39, or alternatively, the end connecting plate 34 of a beam may be connected to a projecting connecting plate of a column, as shown for example in Fig. 32, the column being strengthened at the base by additional angles 35, the upper ends of which abut under the beams ; short angle-pieces 37 are used to connect the column to its support 36. Various alternative arrangements for connecting beams to columns and for connecting column extensions to their main portions are shown and described.
