BUILDING-COLUMN CONNECTION.
Application filed November 21, 1925'; Serial No. 70,703.
My invention relates to building column construction and it is my object to produce simple, strong and cheaply made connections between an H-section column and the floor beams and which may be either one-, two-, threeor four-way connections, as the nature of the building may demand.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a plan View, partly in section, showing four-way connections; Fig. 2 a View, partly in section, of
the structure of Fig. 1 on the line 22 thereof; and Fig. 3, a View, partly in section, of the structure of Fig. 1 on the line 33 thereof.
The column itself is of rolled or' built-up H-section and has a web 1 and flanges 2-2 and 33. Superimposed columns may be connected in any desired manner.
Where a floor beam isto be connected to the parallel flanges 2-3 of the H-section column the flanges are slotted at 4 and 5.
To make the connection a piece of T-section rolled steel is cut ofl, the length equalling the height ofthe slots and the head of the 2B T-section slightly wider than the distance between the slotted flanges of the column. The head 6 of the T-section is slipped into the slots 4 and 5 with its web 7 extending beyond the H-section column and'parallel so with the flanges 2 and 3. The head of the T-connection may be welded to the slots as indicated on the drawing. The web of the I-beam 8, which carries the floor, may then be secured to the web 7 of the T-connection by rivets or in any other suitable manner and lies substantially in line with the column,
If floor beams are to be secured to the E-i-column at right angles to the side flanges slots 9 and 10 are cut in the flanges 2 and 3, which slots are preferably located close to the web 1, and a plate 11 is placed through the slots with their ends projecting beyond the column. If desired the plate may be welded to the slots as shown in the draw- The webs of the I- beams 12 and 13 may then be secured to the projecting ends 01": the plate 11 and the beams will line practically in line with the column.
If a floor beam is to be connected to the fourth side of the column it is not practical to further slot the flanges 2 and 3 as they already have the slots 9 and 10 therein. I prefer to rivet or otherwise secure two pieces of angle'iron 14 and 15 to the insides of the flanges 2 and 3 with their tops in line thereby forming a bracket for the I-beam 16 to rest upon. In this way floor beams may be connected to all four sides of the .column with a minimum of material and labor and with the beams all in substantialalinement with the column thereby avoiding eccentric loading.
I claim r 1. An H-section column, the opposed flanges of which are slotted, in combination with a connection engaging said slots and extending beyond the column and adapted to carry a beam.
2. An H-section column, the opposed flanges of which are slotted, in combination with a T-section connection the head of which engages the flange slots and the web of which extends beyond the column and is adapted to carry a beam.
3. An H-section column, the opposed flanges of which are slotted, in combination with a plate extending through said slots' and projecting beyond the column, the end of which is adapted to carry a beam.
4. An H-section column all the flanges of which are slotted, in combination with a T- section connection the head of which engages the slots in opposed flanges and the web of which extends beyond the column and adapted to carry a beam and a plate extending through the slots in the other flanges and projecting beyond the column, the end of which is adapted to carry a beam.
5. An H-section column the opposed flanges of which are slotted, in combination with a connection engaging said slots and projecting beyond the column and adapted to carry a beam and a bracket secured to the inside of said slotted flanges and adapted to carry a beam.
6. Building construction comprising an H-column, angle brackets secured to the 0pposed inner faces of two of the flanges and adapted to carry'a beam.
