Abstract

496,739. Structural metal joints. ROTENBURGER METALLWERKE R. STIERLEN. Feb. 24, 1937, No. 5601. Void. Convention date, Feb. 18. [Class 20 (ii)] The Specification describes various means for joining the metal girders of a floor or roof structure as set forth below: (1) Two aligned I-section girders, which may be rolled sections or built up by welding the flanges 2, 3 to the web 1 as shown in Fig. 3, are connected together by welding a web plate 4 to the projecting web 1 of each girder and at right angles thereto, and welding a flange 5 to the top of the web 4 ; the ends of the two girders are brought together so that the web plates 4 of the girders are in contact, and a welded connection is then made at the places 13, 14. Instead of the flange 5 being welded to the two girders, cover-plates 17 may be fitted over the upper and lower flanges of the girders and welded at their ends to these flanges. Triangular bracket members may be welded in the corners between the upper and lower flanges of the girders and the flanges 5. (2) The joint between two I-section girders which cross each other at right-angles is made by cutting from the upper half of one girder and the lower half of the crossing girder a portion which is shaped as shown at 24, Fig. 5, to allow for the desired interfit. (3) The joint shown in Figs. 6 and 7 between two crossing I-girders 22, 23 is formed by cutting slots of triangular form on the opposite sides of the upper and lower flanges of both girders at the crossing point ; one girder is provided with a slot in the upper half of its web and the other girder has a corresponding slot in the lower half of its web. The shape and disposition of the triangular slots in the flanges of the girders may be varied to permit the girders to cross at any desired angle to each other. (4) The joint member shown in Figs. 9 and 10 comprises upper and lower flanges 29, 30 and two welded webs 26, 27, with a tube 28 interposed between and welded to the webs. The tube 28 serves for the welded connection of the webs 31 ... 36 of I-girders, the edges of the flanges of which are welded to the edges of the flanges 29, 30 and to each other where they contact. This construction may be modified by providing a continuous web between the flanges 29, 30, dispensing with the tube 28, and welding on opposite sides of the web. an arcuate member and an angle member which members serve for the welded connection of the girders 31 ... 36. (5) Two flanged girders 43, 44 disposed at right-angles to each other and a third angularlydisposed flanged girder 48 are welded together as shown in Fig. 11 by the aid of an arcuate member 47 mounted between the girders 43, 44. The Specification also describes the framework of a floor or roof structure, but the description is of such a character that it does not lend itself to satisfactory abridgment. Specification 363,154 is referred to.
