930,997. Metal beams. HANDLEY BROWN CO. Sept. 28, 1959. [Nov. 14, 1958], No. 32901/59. Class 20 (2). An aluminium beam comprises two webs 28, Fig. 9, joined by bracing 24, the webs 28 comprising three abutment surfaces 16 and 36, Fig. 14, and adjacent enlarged portions 14, 34 forming shoulders 17, 37 which conduct heat away from the abutment surfaces during welding of the bracing 24 thereto. The central surface 36 is raised on a rib 18. The bracing 24, which comprises a double-bent extruded bar, may be upright or diagonal and may be omitted at the outside or centre to form I and box beams respectively. The bracing may be spaced more closely at points of stress. The embodiment of Fig. 16 shows a box beam comprising low angle sections 38 joined by bracing 24 and at its ends by plates 52. The sections 38 comprise abutment surfaces 48 and shoulders 46. Holes 58 are formed in the sections 38 and plates 52. These holes are formed by displacing the material of the holes into two opposite ridges 60 adjacent end hole 58. Stiffening angle sections 62 having corresponding holes are bolted thereby within the sections 38 at the points of stress. Fig. 21 illustrates a box beam comprising two opposed channels 68 joined by bracing 24. The channels 68 have a reduced centre portion 76, the flanges 72 being thicker than the base 74.
