Abstract

640,531. Girders. HOROWITZ, A. Nov. 5, 1947, No. 29531. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1946. [Classes 20(ii) and 20(iv)] A girder comprises built-up halves joined in the plane of the web, each half composed of small plates 3a connected in spaced relation by flanges 1a, 2a, the plates of the two halves being staggered, some at least of the plates of one half overlapping the lateral edges of the plates of the other half and the two halves being united at the overlapping edges, longitudinal gaps 4 thus being left alternately on both sides of the web between the flanges and plates. Wind bracings 8 or other bars may thus be secured to the plates without weakening the flanges. By leaving out one or more plates a beam 6 may pass through the girder, being secured to an adjacent web plate by angles 7. When made of metal the web plates may have holes, tongues, bent edges, &c. to facilitate connection with other structural members. Preferably the joints between metal parts are effected by resistance welding. T- or Z-shaped girders may be similarly built-up.
