(Class 45] [Also in Group X] Prefabricated open-work metal panels for use in road, runway or like surfacing are formed of small 'section channel bars 1A, 1B, Figs. 4, 5, and 14, the channels having flanges projecting outwardly at right-angles on each side of the mouth of the channel and being arranged in two superimposed layers ; the bars of a layer are parallel and at right-angles to those of the other layer, to which they are fixed by rivets 2 or welds at each intersection. The bars of both layers may have their channels facing downwards, or the bars of the lower layer may be inverted and their flanges in contact with those of the upper layer. At opposite ends of a diagonal, the two end bars of a panel are cut off, as at 5, so that the panels may be laid in echelon. The panels are laid with the ends of the bars 1B of one panel between the ends of the bars 1B of the adjacent panel, the ends of the bars 1A of adjacent panels are then connected by joint covers 8, Fig. 7, or, for the corners of the panels, covers 24, Fig..9, these covers being channelled and flanged to fit snugly over the bars 1A and having depending lugs,9, 25, which are then bent under the bars 1A. Parallel end bars 1A of adjacent panels are similarly connected by covers 21, Fig. 13, comprising two flanged channel sections connected by a web plate 22 and provided with lugs 23. The panels may be arranged to interlock, as by projections on one panel engaging openings on the next.
