580,350. Continuous grating structures. IRVING, W. E. July 5, 1944, No. 12815. Convention date, March 14. [Class 107] In a continuous traffic-bearing grating structure like panels A, B and C, arranged in end to end relation, are joined together at their ends by a splice, so as to give uniform continuity of surface. Each panel is made up of straight bars 10, 11, 12, 13, which have crimped metal strips 14, 15 and 16 interposed between them, and which terminate at one end in offset tongues 19, and at the other end has a splicing portion 18, which portions of panel B abut against shoulder portions 23 of panel A. A crimped strip 17, having adjacent ends 25b of panel A and 36 of panel B joined by a weld, engages the bar 13 and forms one longitudinal side of the grating, the bar 10 being the other. The arms 37 of strips 14, 15 and 16 of panel A are welded to the tongues 19 of bars 11, 12 and 13, whilst the ends 35, 36 of strips 14, 15, 16 of panel B are welded to lugs 24 on the tongues 19 of bars 11, 12 and 13 of panel A. The contacting portions 25, 26 of the crimped strips are riveted to the bars 11, 12, 13 and initially are bolted to the bar 10. These bolts are replaced by rivets when securing panels A and B to panel C, whilst the contacting portions 25a of strips 14 and 16 of panel A engage with the portions 18 of bars 10 and 12 of panel B.
