739,350. Making hollow beams; welding by pressure. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Jan. 22, 1954 [Jan. 23, 1953], No. 2038/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A process of manufacturing hollow steel structural members comprises forming sheet steel into two separate complementary U-sectioned channel members, scalloping at least one edge of one of said complementary channel members, assembling said members with their open sides together to form a box-like structure and with their edges abutting so that the intersection of at least one of the two pairs of abutting edges provides a series of disconnected welding areas of limited extent and resistance welding said members together. A channel member 10 with its sides 11 periodically pushed out to form scallops 12 has superimposed thereon a complementary unscalloped channel member 13 and pressure and a low potential alternating current is applied to the two remote faces of the box-section so produced so that abutting edges of the channel members are welded together where they intersect. In making a long beam end sections may be thus welded and the intermediate section arc-welded. One edge of each member may be scalloped and opposed to a plain edge of the other member. One edge of one section may be scalloped and the abutting plain edges at the other side of the beam arcwelded. Both edges of both members may be scalloped and the members assembled with opposing scallops out of phase; the scallops may not have identical curves.
