Abstract

967,370. Exhaust silencers. L. F. DAVID. Dec. 27, 1961 [Dec. 29, 1960], No. 46233/61. Heading FIB. [Also in Division E1] A metal panel, forming a flat fence for deflecting a jet engine exhaust, is formed of expanded metal strips welded together at their edges, the strips being expanded by providing slits A B and pressing the material on opposite sides thereof in opposite directions to provide substantially diamond shaped opening 2. The lowest points of the openings on one strip are welded to the highest points of those on the adjacent strip whereby a panel is formed with the planes of the flat portions 3 on each strip parallel to one another and spaced apart by the width of the openings 2, the planes of the strips being at an angle a of about 40 degrees to the general plane X X, Fig. 5, of the panel. The ends of the strips are preferably welded to U-section girders M2 which are welded at an angle b of about 60 degrees to horizontal girders M6, whereby the faces of the strips are at an angle a+b of about 100 degrees to a horizontal jet stream f<SP>1</SP> which is thereby directed upwards through the openings in the fence.
