[Class 20 (i).] A tapered metal pylon is made from rolled metal sections, or shaped metal sheets, or a combination of both, welded along their longitudinal meeting edges to form a hollow structure of closed straight-sided quadrangular section at any height, having two axes of symmetry, preferably at right-angles, about which the section moduli are unequal. Fig. 1 (Comp.) shows a pylon formed of plates 3 having abutting and flanged edges welded together ; Fig. 3 (Comp.) shows a pylon of rolled sections 1 and plate sections 3 welded along their longitudinal meeting edges. The pylon may be formed of angle bars and plates, or a metal blank bent to form as shown in Fig. 7 (Comp.), the meeting edges 5 being welded. The pylon may taper in one or both directions of height, or the sections 2, 3 may be stepped as shown in Figs. 9 (Comp.) and 10 (Comp.) to provide the taper. As shown in Figs. 3 (3265/32) and 5 (3265/32), the webs of the channel sections 1, 2 are split at their lower portions and the sections are opened out and joined by tapered metal plates 5, 6 to form a tapered pylon.
