Abstract

High-boiling liquids are distilled in a vessel of annular form with a transverse partition, the inlet being situated on one side of the partition and the outlet on the other. The vessel consists of an outer shell c and an inner wall g having a dome u sunk below the extreme top of the wall. Liquid enters by a pipe a close <PICT:0495949/III/1> <PICT:0495949/III/2> to a partition m and flows round the annulus to an exit l on the other side of the partition. The vessel is heated either by combustion gases applied externally or by steam pipes o. Direct steam may be injected through spray pipes p. Guide plates n with small apertures v at the base may be provided to keep the circulation uniform. The vapours arising from the liquid pass through a condensate trap t on their way to the exit y; any liquid retained by the trap falls back on to the dome u and is returned through an outlet k to the main body of liquid near the inlet a. The outlet l can if desired be connected by a conduit to the inlet a for re-cycling.
