Abstract

<PICT:0916609/III/1> Steam enters the shell 10 through inlets 13 and 14. 15 denotes a tubular heat exchanger extending horizontally and longitudinally of the shell 10 at the top thereof, water to be deaerated flowing in by inlet 10 and through the exchanger 15 to nozzles 16 debouching into a chamber 17 between the heat exchanger 15 and a horizontal perforated plate 18 extending diametrically of the shell 1 below the heat exchanger 15. The plate 18 is provided with a weir 19 over which de-aerated water flows by way of baffles 21 and a central passage 22 to the outlet 12. If desired, the plate 18 may be crimped, corrugated or/and dented, and may be provided with upstanding baffles 20. 25 denotes a connection for a safety valve for the shell 10. Steam from the inlet 13 flowing upwardly through the perforations in the plate 18 imparts sensible heat to the water. The heat exchanger 15 is so arranged that a small portion of the steam and vapour rising from the chamber 17 will not be condensed but will flow, together with air and gases, in an uncondensed state through vents 24 to atmosphere so as to prevent the re-absorption of air and gases by steam and vapour being condensed in the heat exchanger 15. Thus, the amount of air and gases which are returned to water in the chamber 17 is maintained small. A modified de-aerator with the same principles is also shown in the Provisional Specification.
