Abstract

<PICT:0455581/III/1> Steam-heated apparatus for concentrating liquids comprises a tubular heater 6 combined with one or more tubular pilot heaters 8 and 9, and a vapour separating chamber 1 surrounding the top of heater 6, the liquid streams from all the heaters entering this chamber and impinging on each other. The streams from heaters 8 and 9 are led in tangentially to the periphery of chamber 1. A baffle 7 is provided over the tube outlets of heater 6. An overflow pipe 16 returns liquid from the chamber 1 to the bottom of the heaters. The chamber 1 is provided with a vapour outlet 21 leading to a condenser 20, the heating steam for heater 6 passes through an injector 5 and entrains some of the vapour in chamber 1. Heater 9 receives steam through passage 12 from heater 6, while heater 8 receives steam from an ejector 13a which draws off the uncondensible gases from condenser 20.
