Rectifiers; film evaporators; separate heater and evaporator apparatus.-In fractionating petroleum and other liquids, the vapours from the still are passed through a series of rectifiers a, Fig. 1, connected by atmospheric condenser pipes m, and by reflux pipes b for the condensates. The rectifiers a, Fig. 3, are so constructed that the condensate entering a bottom compartment o by the reflux pipe b flows upwards through tubes c projecting into a compartment n, where the condensate is brought into contact with the vapours and is thereby. heated. The resulting vapours pass into the condenser pipes m, and the remaining liquid flows by the reflux pipe b to the next rectifier. The condensate may be further heated by means of an open steam pipe l, or while passing through an intermediate heating-compartment p.
