Abstract

Multiple-effect apparatus; bulk evaporators; separate heater and evaporator apparatus.-In evaporating-apparatus in which the liquid circulates through a heating-device, the heated liquid is passed, prior to its return to the heating device, through a chamber in which a considerable surface of liquid from which evaporation takes place is formed. The chamber may be formed inside or separate from the head of the evaporator. Circulation of liquid is effected by gravity or by a pump. As shown in Fig. 4, applied to multipleeffect apparatus, each effect comprises a vertical tubular heater, surmounted by a chamber a<1> from which vapour passes through perforations p and liquid through an opening o into an annular chamber F. The liquid is caused by a partition n to pass round the chamber to a pipe g by which it is returned to the base of the heater. The liquid to be evaporated is, prior to its entry into the multiple-effect apparatus, passed through a chamber D maintained under vacuum to remove incondensible gases and is then fed either through a valve 5 to the effect C of lowest pressure or by a pump 10 to the effects A, B, of higher pressures. Pumps 10, 23, 36 serve to assist circulation of the liquid through the effects and also to feed liquid from effects of lower pressure to those of higher pressure. Pipes 28, 30, 32 serve to feed liquid from effects of higher pressure. to those of lower pressure. Valves 8, 21, 27 enable liquid to be withdrawn from any effect. The effects may be placed on different levels so that liquid may be fed to effects at higher pressure without the use of pumps.
