Abstract

164,407. Ellis, G. W. Jan. 8, 1920. Evaporators and condensers in structural combination; film evaporators.-In a distilling apparatus in which liquid to be distilled is caused to flow down the outer surface of a tube 1 through which a heating-medium is passed, and the vapours are condensed on the inner surface of a surrounding tube 2, the liquid is caused to travel in a spiral path by wrapping the tube 1 with spiral coils of wire 18. The coils at their upper ends are formed into calyxshaped screens 19 to catch splashes of liquid. The annular distilling. chamber may be exhausted and may be kept at different temperatures at different portions of its length. The tube 2 may be water-jacketed. Additional annular tubes may be used, and the outer surface of the tube 2 used as an evaporating- surface for a liquid of lower boiling-point.
