Abstract
174,569. Griscom-Russell Co., (Assignees of Jefferson, C.). Jan. 25, 1921, [Convention date]. Rectifiers. - Petroleum or other vapours to be fractionated are admitted by an inlet 8 to a lower shell 2 and pass upwards through pipes 26, Fig. 1, open at their lower ends and leading to pipes 11 which pass through the upper shell 1, and are cooled by a cooling-agent circulated between openings 9, 10 and caused to take a circuitous course bv a spiral baffle 20. The upper ends of the tubes 11 are secured to a hollow head 15 capable of slight movement in the casing 1 so as to allow of expansion of the tubes, and having a vapour outlet 17. The heavy fractions condensed from the vapours are withdrawn through an outlet 7. Instead of two sets of pipes, the pipes 11 may project into the lower casing, or the lower casing may contain a spiral baffle 30, Fig. 4, down which the liquid dripping from the pipes 11 will flow in countercurrent to the vapours. The amount of the vapour which is condensed is varied by varying the rate of flow or the temperature of the cooling-agent which is passed through the shell 1. The baffle 20 may be constructed as described in Specification 176,753, [Class 64 (iii), Surface apparatus &c.].
