Abstract
271,130. Chur, E. Jan. 22, 1926. Liquids, treating with gases. - In separating mixtures of liquids such as tar oils, washing oils, &c., the liquid is passed from a pipe 4 down a main column A, Fig. 4, arranged so that the vapours generated also pass down the column, which is divided into sections. The vapours from the base of each section are drawn off through pipes 1, 2, 3, into separate condensing columns r, and the reflux from each of these columns is passed into the base of the succeeding condensing column. The main column is formed with passages a, b, c, Fig. 1, in the side walls. Steam for heating passes through the passages a and through spaces e below the plates. Liquid flows from plate to plate through passages c, and vapours flow downwards through passages b, h, and through pipes f immersed in the liquid on the plate below. The pipes may project into the spaces h to collect and remove condensates. In place of heating by steam, the liquid on each plate may be heated by being passed through tubes in a furnace flue or in the liquid or vapour space of a tar still. The tubes may be surrounded by a steam jacket, and the superheated steam formed in the jacket be used in the lower divisions of the column. The condensing columns in which the vapours pass upwards are formed with coolers k, Fig. 4, which take vapours from one plate of the column, partially condense these vapours, and return the condensate to a plate below and the uncondensed vapours to a plate above. The condensate from the base of the column passes by a pipe 9 into the base of the next condensing column, which receives hotter vapours.
