Abstract

Column stills and rectifiers. - In a column apparatus for separating the more volatile constituent of a mixture of liquids, preheating apparatus for the liquid mixture is placed in the column between the distilling and rectifying portions of the column. The liquid mixture is supp l i e d continuously through a perforated pipe r to the base of a preheating vessel c provided with a heating coil h, The heated liquid flows from the top of the vessel down a passage n through a liquid seal u and thence in succession down the trays of the distilling- column b to a collecting vessel a, which is heated by a steam coil or by direct steam from a perforated pipe i. The residual liquid passes away by an overflow z. The vapours from the distilling column b rises through a passage m at the side of the preheating vessel c pass up the rectifying column d. Vapours pass from the top of the column by a pipe e to a condenser, and condensate from the column passes by a pipe t into the vessel c. A reflux condenser may be inserted at the top of the rectifying column. The preheating-vessel c may be provided with two or more coils h which may be removed, for repair, &c., through a side opening in the vessel which is closed, during use, by a cover.
