Abstract

215,716. Soc. Ricard, Allenet, et Cie. May 9, 1923, [Convention date]. Alcoholic liquids, distilling; glycerine, concentrating. - Organic liquids are dehydrated by distilling in presence of a liquid which yields a vaporous mixture containing water vapour at a lower temperature than the boiling points of the constituents, forming, on condensation, a distillate which separates into two layers, the layer containing the greater proportion of the added liquid being returned to the distilling- apparatus. Suitable liquids are benzene, toluene, xylene, solvent naphtha, esters, hydrocarbons, and chlorinated derivatives such as trichlorethylene, and nitro compounds, such as nitrobenzene, nitrocyclohexane, and nitromethane. In dehydrating glycerine, toluene is placed on the plates of a column A heated by steam coils S', S<2>, S<3> to obtain a maximum temperature of 120‹ C., and glycerine is supplied by a pipe a. Vapours containing toluene and water pass at about 83.7‹ C. to a condenser C. The condensate separates into two layers in a vessel D. The lower layer of water is discharged through a pipe f and the upper layer of toluene is returned to the column by a pipe n. Dehydrated glycerine is withdrawn from the base of the column A through a cooler H. In dehydrating propyl alcohol by distilling in presence of trichlorethylene, both the upper and lower layers in the separating vessel D contain substantial proportions of propyl alcohol. The lower layer containing mainly trichlorethylene is returned to the column A, and the upper layer is passed in succession through two small distilling columns the first of which yields vapours mainly of trichlorethylene which are passed into the pipe b, and the second yields, as vapours, propyl alcohol which is passed to the column A, and, as residual liquid, water which is discharged from the base of the column. Specifications 159,880, 206,747, 213,985 and 214,581 are referred to.
