Abstract

<PICT:0348817/III/1> <PICT:0348817/III/2> Olefines are separated from a mixture of paraffins and olefines by distilling the mixture in the presence of liquid ammonia or methylamine. A mixture comprising 18 parts of butylene, 27 parts of butane, and 55 parts of ammonia is placed in a still 2 provided with a packed fractionating column 3 and heated by a heater 1 so that the temperature at the still head is 132 DEG F. at 375 lbs. pressure. The vapours distilling over are condensed in a condenser 5 and part of the condensate is returned as reflux through the pipe 13, the remainder being removed through a pipe 15. The distillate consists of 26,5 parts butane, 4,5 parts butylene, and 42 parts ammonia, while the residue consists of 13,5 parts butylene, 0,5 parts butane and 13 parts ammonia, a product containing 96 per cent butylene being obtained after removal of the ammonia. The apparatus may be modified by passing the condensate through a cooling coil 6 to a separator 7 where the distillate separates into two layers, the top layer containing the hydrocarbons chiefly being removed while the lower layer which consists chiefly of ammonia is used as reflux. Additional reflux in the form of ammonia may be introduced through the pipe 25. In the separation of highly volatile hydrocarbons not easily liquefied a high pressure scrubbing system may be used employing ammonia as scrubbing agent, the hydrocarbons dissolved in the ammonia being then distilled as described above.ALSO:<PICT:0348817/IV/1> <PICT:0348817/IV/2> Olefines are separated from a mixture of paraffins and olefines by distilling the mixture in the presence of liquid ammonia or methylamine.
