Fatty acids, obtaining and purifying; fatty oils, purifying. - In distilling fatty acids and other volatile substances from oils, fats, acid fatty oils or crude fatty acids by treatment in vacuo with steam or inert gas, the treatment is effected so that the material is heated for only a short time. The material from a tank 3 passes through a preheater 4 to a still 5 in which it flows down a filling material such as Raschig rings. The unvaporized material is continuously discharged through a cooler 7 and barometric tubes to receivers 8. The still is evacuated by an injection condenser 1 and air pump 2. Steam or inert gas is injected into the base of the still and carries the vapours through a condenser 6 maintained at about 125‹ C. to condense fatty acids, and if necessary through a second condenser to separate other volatile substances. The still is maintained at about 250‹ C. by circulating superheated steam, gases, or liquids through coils or jackets, or by electric heating devices, or by superheating the steam or gas injected into the base. Intimate contact may be obtained between the material and the steam or gas by a fine division of the material as it enters the still, or by allowing it to flow into a thin layer over a perforated plate through which the. steam or air passes.
