Abstract

<PICT:0369623/III/1> In processes for rectifying wines of the double effect type described in Specifications 107,975 and 189,458, [both in Class 32, Distilling &c.], the distilling and purifying columns are worked under vacuum while the rectification column is operated under atmospheric pressure instead of the opposite way round. The purification column A, the rectifier C, C<1>, and the distillation column K are arranged in the usual manner the wine being introduced through a valve p and passing through a recuperator L and a small heater M into the column K. The vapours produced are condensed in a water cooled condenser N and the condensate is fed through a pipe 7 and recuperator J to the purifier A from which it flows through a pipe 12 to the rectifier C. The necessary heat is supplied to the latter by a steam coil T. The double effect is obtained by mounting a tubular heater D on the top of the rectifier in which the vapours from the rectifier heat the exhausted vinasses supplied from the bottom of the column K through lines 1, 2, by a pump V, and the vapours evolved from the vinasses are passed through a pipe 5 to the distillation column K for which they provide the necessary heat. The column A is similarly heated from the column C by using the residues therefrom as heating means for the recuperator J through which the condensate on its way to the column A is passed. In a modification for treating thick liquids such as grain must, the steam condensed in the coil used for heating the rectifier is passed to the heater D where it is re-evaporated and the steam produced is used for heating the distillation column while the thick musts are heated in exchangers by the vapours from the column K.
