Abstract

The process described in the parent Specification in which fermented liquors are directly distilled and rectified in a plant comprising distilling and purifying columns K, A, worked under vacuum and a rectifier C, C<1> operated under atmospheric pressure, the distilling column being heated by vapours from a tubular boiler D itself heated by the vapours from the rectifier, is modified by utilizing as the boiler liquid the water deprived of alcohol from the base of the rectifier. The liquid rises up the pipe 23 since the boiler is under vacuum. Pumps P<2>, P<1> withdraw the vapours and condensate respectively from the condenser N to the purifying column which latter is heated by condensed steam from the coil heater S of the <PICT:0453222/III/1> <PICT:0453222/III/2> rectifier. According to a further modification, the purifying column is replaced by a column K<1>, Fig. 2, containing concentrating plates, arranged above the distilling column. This results in a better elimination of head products from the latter, and since more steam is required in the column and therefore in the rectifier, an increased separation of tail products from the latter. Some of the tail products are removed from the distilling column and collect in a receiver R<1>. Instead of the cyclic method of working in which the must is first treated in the combined distilling and purifying column K--K<1> and then rectified in the column C--C<1>, in a further modification, the must is divided, one part being treated in the column K--K<1> and the other part in the rectifying column C--C<1>. The necessary additional heat is supplied to the must before entering the rectifying column by three recuperators heated respectively by hot vinasse from the boiler D, the vinasse from the column C--C<1>, and a part of the steam supplied to the rectifying column. The plant illustrated in Fig. 1 may also be modified for use with musts poor in alcohol, by the addition of a supplementary distilling column supplied separately with must and working at atmospheric pressure and also combined with the column K in double effect.
