Abstract

In the distillation of water or other scaleforming liquids in an evaporator 20 provided with tubes 32 surrounded by a chest 30, wherein the feed water is boiled in the tubes, the vapour is passed to compressor 40 and most of the compressed vapour is then used as a heating-medium in chest 30, the formation of heavy scale inside the tubes is prevented by passing a portion of the compressed vapour through line 82 into a vessel 80 which contains an acid, and forcing the acid through line 86 into the water which is being fed into the evaporator through conduit 22. Alternatively, the acid may be dissolved in some of the feed water and the concentrated solution is then allowed to diffuse slowly into the feed stream. Hydrochloric, sulphuric, acetic and citric acids and sodium bisulphate are specified as scale-treating materials, and reference is made to inhibitors for preventing the attack on metal by acid. The distillate is withdrawn from chest 30 via line 46, together with a mixture of gas and vapour. The vapour is condensed in vent-condenser 16, and the condensate p joins the main distillate flowing down line 52. The feed water enters the system through conduit 10, and first passes through preheater 12 where it passes in heat-exchange relation with the distillate and the blowdown, withdrawn from the evaporator by pump 58. The preheated feed flows through vent condenser 16 into <PICT:0935178/III/1> conduit 22, where it is treated with acid, and then enters the evaporator. The appropriate time to open the vent-valve on condenser 16 is indicated by pressure-gauges 110 and 112. Auxiliary heat can be supplied to the evaporator by means of the cooling liquid from the jacket of the diesel engine which drives compressor 40; the exhaust gases from the engine may also be used.
