Abstract
<PICT:0362729/III/1> In the distillation of liquids, particularly sea water, by multiple effect in two stages the distillate from the first stage is again evaporated as feed water in the second stage and the vapour from the first stage is used as the heating medium for the second stage. An evaporator a having a large water space is used in combination with a separate heater and evaporator apparatus comprising heating vessels B and an evaporator C. The liquid flows from the evaporator c through pipes f, g, h to the lower headers i of the vessels B and thence through pipes k, l back to the evaporator C being heated in the pipes k by vapours from the evaporator A entering the heaters B through stop valve e. The condensate formed in the heaters B is returned as make-up feed through valves m and pipes n into the lower parts g of the pipes h. The evaporator A is heated by a bank of pipes b supplied with steam through a pipe a and part of the condensate led off by a pipe c is circulated through a pipe p as make-up to the separator C from which vapours are led off through pipes o.
