Abstract

<PICT:0368838/III/1> Oil is distilled by the introduction in vapour form into a fractionating tower at a point below the lowest stripping section but above a group of bubble trays serving to produce a residuum of flash point greater or equal to that of the fraction removed at the stripping section, the residual oil being transferred to a flash tower maintained under vacuum and having no bubble trays, so that the overhead from the flash tower can be combined with the fraction from the lowest stripping section of the fractionating tower. Oil heated to about 525 DEG F. in a tube still 2 is passed through a pipe 3 into a fractionating tower 1 constructed as described in Specification 270,720, [Class 32 Distilling &c.], with trays 89, 93, 94 and stripping sections 91, 92 from which fractions such as kerosene and light gas oil are withdrawn through pipes 19, 21 and condensed in condensers 20, 22. Vapours pass off at the top through a pipe 8, heat exchanger 9, coolers 11, 12, and separator 13 to a tank 14 from which condensate is returned to as reflux to the tower 1 through a pipe 18. The residual oil after further treatment with superheated steam admitted through a pipe 7 is removed by a pump 24 and line 25 to a second heater 26 and a tower 28 similar in construction to the tower 1. Vapours from the tower pass off through a pipe 34, heat exchanger 33, cooler 35 and pipe 36 to a vacuum run down tank 37, the cooler 35 being connected to a barometric condenser 39 and pump 40 by a line 38. Similarly fractions drawn off through pipes 49, 59, 67, are passed through coolers 52, 60, 68 to run down tanks 54, 62, 70, all of which communicate with a conduit 41 connected to the pipe 38. Part of the condensate from the tank 37 is returned as reflux to the tower 28 through a pipe 48. The residues from the tower 28 are evacuated by a pump 75 to vacuum flash tower 77 having no bubble trays above the point of admission of the vapour and supplied with steam through a line 87. The vapours evolved are passed to a cooler 79 and the condensate is mixed with the fraction removed from the lowest stripping section 100 through the pipe 67, stored in the tank 70.
