Abstract

<PICT:0389203/III/1> Oils unfit for carburation or combustion are "homogenized" and rendered fit for such purposes by heating them under vacuum in a still surmounted by a fractionating column the top of which is maintained at a temperature below the distillation temperature so that all the vapours are retained and condensed in the column, while the bottom of the column is maintained at a temperature sufficiently high to prevent retrogression of condensate to the still, prolonged contact of the vapours and condensate being thus obtained and continued until homogenization is effected whereupon the temperature is raised and the mixture withdrawn from the column and condensed. The oil is distilled in a still 1 surmounted by a column 2 surrounded by a jacket 18 through which water is circulated to maintain the required temperature. The vapours finally pass off through a line 3 and separator 4 to a condenser 5, condensate being collected in a tank 8 from a vacuum regulating receiver 7 maintained under high vacuum by a pump 10 which exhausts the gases through a cooler 12 where residual vapours are condensed. Heavy fractions collecting in the separator 4 are deprived of light constituents by trickling down plates 24 and may be returned to the still through a pipe 25 or passed through a cooler 14 to a receiver 15, also kept under vacuum by a pipe 16 connected to the pump 10. Cooling water passes from the cooler 12 through the jackets of the vessels 7, 5, 14 and finally into the jacket 18. Specifications 27005/11, 145,652, and 170,324, [all in Class 32, Distilling &c.], are referred to.
