Abstract

Substances, such as oils, resins, pitch, wax, wool grease, or fatty acids, are distilled under a pressure of 8mm. of mercury or less by causing them to trickle in layers of 1 mm. thickness or less over members of good heat conductivity, such as Raschig rings, which are heated to evaporating temperature, the vapours being passed directly to a refining treatment where part of the vapour is condensed and returns <PICT:0429720/III/1> to the still, thus washing the gas and carrying raw materials carried over back to the still. The liquid is preheated in a boiler 1 and then flows to the vacuum still 2 which is heated by a furnace 14 and is filled with Raschig rings. Unevaporated liquid flows from the still to tanks 4. The vapours flow to a refining cell 3 filled with Raschig rings in which partial condensation takes place and the raw materials are carried back to the still with the condensate. The vapours then pass through coolers 5 and 7, the condensate from each stage being collected in tanks 6 and 8 respectively. The whole apparatus is maintained at a low pressure by the vacuum pump 10. A refrigerating apparatus 11, 12 and 16 cools the vapours that pass to the pump 10 in order to improve the vacuum maintained.
